Nothing special or exciting here, a run of the mill three star album. Even the better tracks seem a bit jaded with time. Great blues from the band that toured this stuff in the late sixties and I remember them well from a free festival in Hyde Park with Eric Burdon & John Sebastian.

The Blind Owl was a pivotal figure in this band and they never really got it together after his death somehow. His counterpoint was strangely essential. That said, Larry Taylor was arguably one of the best bass players of that time, I'd never seen or heard fretless bass before. A fair enough compilation but no unheard gems or standout tracks here. It'll get played but maybe not too often.

To put it more clearly, this CD shows all the limitations of a live album, as usual sound is poor, lot of talking, nevertheless it was my first CSN&Y record some years back and I fell in love with the band. You have to remember that this is about 35 yrs old, so of course people were quite different at the time, they believed (or were supposed to believe)in peace, love and so on...nevertheless the music is still great. The version of Southern man is so much better than the "After the goldrush" version, interesting also the acoustic version of cowgirl in the sand (you won't find it anywhere else, not even in Neil Young's bootlegs). A lot of other songs are great: Chicago, The lee Shore, Right between the eyes, all of them don't suffer much from the live version. ... Read More:

A lot of fans and critics enjoy using the term `the Springsteen canon' when it comes to discussing the highs and (very few) lows in The Boss' career. When it comes to The Rising, the canon is very much filled with some of the finest gunpowder around.
Simply put, this is one of Springsteen's best.

The hype that surrounded the album's release focused on his first full recording with the equally legendary E-Street band and of course, the fall-out from 9/11. I bought this album with an open mind, because all the Springsteen albums I own (Born in the USA, Devils and Dust, Magic, The Essential, Lucky Town, Tunnel of Love, Born to Run, The River, Greetings from Asbury Park) have never left me disappointed. I fell in love with the music immediately: Lonesome ... Read More:

Fairport have had many line ups over the years, but nothing can beat Sandy Denny's vocals here. Just fabulous

Besides the strange sound effects cobbled onto the front or end of many of these songs, the factor that links most of them is that they were commercially not successful. And the factor that unites all the failures here is the underplayed vocals. Even Kevin Ayers, who opens this collection, had a somewhat throw-away singing style.

For goodness sake, men, watch 'The X-Factor' to learn the importance of passionate singing. Or think back to other rock singers of the late 1960s: Mick Jagger, Arthur Brown, and even Greg Lake. They all put their souls into their vocals.

Most of the singers on this compilation didn't. They chose insipid instead, and on that path lay Barclay James Harvest. QED.

"A total classic record, that is unbeatable in many ways".

This particular tribute came from one Paul McCartney, who over the last forty years has declared his never ending love for 'Pet Sounds'. And we sure as hell don't know more than he does, so it goes without saying that 'Pet Sounds' is one of the greatest albums ever made.

But what astonishes the most, is that Brian Wilson wrote this virtually single handedly. The Beatles had just released the amazing 'Revolver', for Wilson to come out with something even better.

The saying that genius and madness are two sides of the same coin, it's no surprise to know that Wilson really was going mad at the time (He's since recovered somewhat). His eclectic use of organs, flutes, dog whistles and harpsichords created a sound ... Read More:

Vladimir Ashkenazy must rank as one of the greatest pianists of the modern era. His blend of flawless technique and sensitive interpretation marks him out as being uniquely placed to deliver as near to definitive performances as it is possible to get. This set of piano concerti was my introduction to his work, and I remain as impressed now as I was when I first heard them. He is ably supported by a rich and warm sound from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by the incomparable Sir Georg Solti. Ashkenazy was apparently apprehensive about approaching Beethoven and attempting to play him in the West when he emerged from the Soviet Union as a young man in the sixties; he need not have been. His command of the tonal energy and colours of the piano works is unrivalled. I like all these concerti, have heard them ... Read More:
