Music : The Complete Rca Victor Recordings 1937-1949
Dizzy Gillespie's style was the nemesis of Miles Davis's. Introspection doesn't seem to have been a word often used in Diz's vocabulary, musical or otherwise. His playing did have a 'dizzying' effect always putting speed, dynamism and drama at the forefront of his performances. On this collection Gillespie's talent as a bandleader and musical arranger also come to the fore. He had of course a great theoretical knowledge of music and wasn't afraid to pass this on to other musicians by way of help and encouragement. With the big bands here he manages to register bebop lines in a larger sound and the over-all enthusiasm shows through.

Throughout this collection Gillespie never loses sight of the desire to swing despite his revolutionary ... Read More:

I agree with Matthew. I have had a Dave Brubeck CD from this company (Avid) and it seems that they need to ruin every product they sell. The word "bargepole" comes to mind. Do not touch with a bargepole. Pay the extra and get an original recording

A remarkable live (therefore the odd buzz and balance issues) recording of a big band that under Ellis' direction broke every rule. they played the Hippy venues, wore denim and beads, and blew like they were as tripped out as the audience, expect oddness abound and give it at least 3 goes. High points are 1. An extended and highly improvised Hey Jude that would have had Lennon and Mc Cartney bewildered but I expect impressed. 2. Pussy wiggle stomp, bright as hell even decades later.

Arguably the best of the 1960's/70's Buddy Rich Big Band albums, this features typically full-on, exciting playing by the band. The full band sound is quite loud and brassy but manages to stay just the right side of being too harsh. There is some fine guitar soloing by Walt Namuth and in fact all the soloing is of a high standard. Buddy's drums are recorded very well and his playing is great. Channel 1 Suite is probably my favourite Rich piece, with some memorable tenor from Don Menza and Buddy's thrilling soloing at the finish.

It's sacrilege really giving the Duke any less than 5 stars I know. However, this collection was recorded - as it says on the box - between 1926 and 1949, and that's what you get, with all the sound quality issues that entails. By and large, they have done a great job with these recordings. However, you should know exactly what you are buying here. The Duke recorded many of these "Masterpieces" several times and some listeners might prefer his later recordings which went through various evolutions. Take Sophisticated Lady, recorded in 1933: are you hoping to hear the sumptuous sound of his 1966 orchestra - or the vocal dominated version he recorded in 1956? These recordings all predate the LP and the essence of each those brilliant compositions ... Read More:

a surprisingly accessible & well-produced set, from a disciplined & swinging outfit. very effective deployment of baritone sax, thoughtful & enjoyable arrangements & good melodies should appeal to listeners well outside the reach of sun ra's usual "far out" reputation.

a richly textured and rewarding treat. try it!

To put it briefly, this disc contains the most important track ever made by the greatest (by far) drummer who ever lived, and it is also high on the list of all time finest big band recordings. If you're into any of those categories then at £5.47 it is a no-brainer: buy it. Further, Amazon partner it with Buddy Rich's Big Swing Face album, his other most seminal disc: the two together give you a huge chunk of core percussion history.

To elaborate: in the mid-sixties, drum-phenomenon Buddy Rich put together a new Big Band, at a time when this form seemed to be on the way out in the face of small (economical) rock-n-roll groups. The first outings of this band caused a major buzz, and by September 1966 Rich felt they were ready to record. ... Read More:
