There are already numerous CD anthologies available by the great Benny Goodman Orchestra and this double-disc release undoubtedly rehashes numerous tracks available elsewhere but covering the period 1934-1945 this is a commendable sampling from what was one of the prime big bands of the period considered by many as having reached it's artistic summit. Big band fans will have their own particular favourites amongst the forty-seven included tracks which are taken from the Columbia, Victor and OKeh recordings rather than frequently issued air-checks. There are the established favourites, KING PORTER STOMP, GET HAPPY, ST. LOUIS BLUES, ONE O'CLOCK JUMP and AIR MAIL SPECIAL all bundled up with the Orchestra's opening signature tune LET'S ... A broad range of ideal key titles & lesser releases, from sentiment to more swing numbers, for a very good price by what seems to be the modern standard. As ever, if Al Bowllys voice is delivered clearly & with obvious relish as they are here, there is no reason, i repeat no reason, to not have as much Al in ones collection as is humanely possible.. Even the scouring of individual cds for pickings is a fulfilling pastime. Giving them as gifts equally as so. So it would be wise to gather your Bowllys while you may. Someday soon someones going to realize he's worthy of even more revelation & we will be hearing him everywhere.

This is a personal favourite collection of mine. On it you will find the brilliant original recordings of songs such as Bob Durough's "Three is a Magic Number", and Buddy Rich's "The Beat Goes On". Although you may not recognise all the titles you will recognise many when you hear them. In most cases the original recordings are far superior to the later versions. The highlight of this collection is the raw masterpiece, Marlena Shaw's "Woman in the Ghetto". It would be worth buying this CD just for this one track alone - even though nearly every track is fantastic.
