Music : Back to Back: Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges Play the Blues/Remastered
Previous reviewers have already said everything that needs to be said, so I'll keep this short. This is a small group recording with Jo Jones on drums Les Spann on Guitar, Johnny Hodges on Alto Sax and Harry Edison on Trumpet.

None of the tracks are Ellington tunes, which is very unusual. When Ellington plays these tunes they begin to sound like he wrote them. In this case its probably because they are all blues. With a talent as great as Ellington's you quickly put your mark on the music. All the musicians play beautifully. This isn't a wild jam session, so whilst there certainly are sparks they are of a more subtle nature.

If you want to hear more of Ellington's under-rated Piano playing I strongly recommend "Piano ... Read More:

This album is a fine example of the compositional talents of Duke Ellington and his alter ego, Billy Strayhorn. The atmosphere created by the arrangements is quite special, and certainly unique. Each track takes for inspiration a character from Shakespeare and the tunes themselves range from orchestral set pieces designed for atmosphere (Sam Woodyards drums are an education) to settings for some truely incredible solo performances, particularly from Johnny Hodges who will melt your heart with "star crossed lovers" in a performance that stamps his authority on the alto ballad.

On a more general note, I do find it frustrating to hear some jazz fans describe Ellingtons best as being over come the 1940s. This is absolutely untrue. Albums like ... Read More:

I have little to add to the other two reviewers' comments, except that I fully agree on most counts. The transfers fortunately needed little if any remastering due to the excellent quality of the original recordings (other Vocalion reissues are somewhat wanting in clarity of sound due to too heavy remastering); also I disagree that Jack Plant (dreadfully mannered and with a frightful fake posh accent) was a good choice as a singer; much better are Les Allen (who displays some incertainty in his intonation however) the underrated Harry Bentley and of course the superior Al Bowlly (on one track only; more of him can be heard on vol. 6).
But it's the quality of the music, arrangements and excecution that really carries the day and makes this set, ... Read More:
