This has to be one of James Last finest albums. Certainly worth the five stars, the tracks are instrumentals of various country artists - Crystal Gayle, Eagles etc Perfectly performed, this will suit everybodys collection - a great party spinner. Well worth listening too.

This has to be one of James Last finest albums. Certainly worth the five stars, the tracks are instrumentals of various country artists - Crystal Gayle, Eagles etc Perfectly performed, this will suit everybodys collection - a great party spinner. Well worth listening too.

A mere 5 stars doesn't do justice to this fantastic CD. This is Count Basie's band blowing up a storm at the Sands Hotel, Las Vegas, in January 1966, where they "warmed up" the Vegas crowd prior to the arrival on stage of Frank Sinatra. Seeing and hearing the Basie band in person was always a joy to behold, and I doubt if there is a better 'live' Basie record than this one. Thanks to the superb sonic quality, this is an electrifying audio treat that captures one of Basie's best bands at its peak. Close your eyes and you're transported to the front row of the Copa Room at the Sands Hotel. The perfect companion disc to this CD is 'Sinatra at the Sands' which was recorded during the same engagement.

This collection is well worth your attention. Many not too familiar items have been included which makes it a good complement to other releases (mainly on Vocalion). Although I myself am not too enamoured of bands like Nat Gonella, Joe Loss or Harry Roy (although his "She Had To Go And Lose It At The Astor" is a riot) and would gladly have seen th inclusion of other bands in their stead, this is a purely personal preference and I'm sure that other people will find their inclusion worth while. Remastering is better than on the companion disc, but again, no info about recording dates, which I personally find deplorable.

this cd was recorded in 2000 and is therefore not the original soundtrack. It does contain the different versions of several songs, but simply does not have the cool of the original soundtrack, none of the tracks live up to the west coast jazz feel of the movie. Although still conducted by Lalo Schifrin the different musicians are obviously going to result in a different sound/feel, however this lacks important parts, most notably Howard Roberts great playing on the title track and the stunning Music to Interrogate by. This CD does not live up to the 1968 recordings, fans of the original Schifrin should avoid

At last we have the re-issue of Ellington's favourite of his extended works from the original tapes. Some years ago this was issued with the wrong takes of the first part and it was said that the master of the correct takes had been lost by Columbia.They have obviously now been found and the remastering is excellent. Duke said in interview that this was the favourite of his extended works and one can see why. The band plays up a storm and the cast of singers, noteably Ossie Bailey and Margaret Tynes are superb. This work has always been underated, perhaps because it was written as a TV production with dancing. (What a shame there is no video of this show).
