This was my first SACD jazz disc. I'm trying to build a collection and I'm sampling each genre. It was also the first time I bought an SACD knowing it was stereo only.

I'm not very knowledgeable about jazz, really a newcomer to the genre with only a handful of CDs, but even I have heard of these famous bands. On listening I can tell you the programme is pure joy. Really entertaining, lively throughout. The alternate takes are really worth listening to. I can't add more than the previous reviewer.

As far as the SACD format is concerned, I'm afraid a combination of my slightly damaged hearing and a sound system not specifically built for SACDs (I'm using a decent enough home cinema rig) means that I can't tell ... Read More:

This is one of the best swing albums in my (quite extensive) collection...
The reunion of Basie band with Lester Young, Jimmy Rushing and Jo Jones is beyond words and the final jam (with Roy Eldridge and Illinois Jacquet as adittional attraction...) is... wow!

The title is misleading, as a fan of his orchestal music I was disappointed to say the least when practically every one of the tunes were in fact vocals. The CD should be called SING AND DANCE WITH JAMES LAST.

175.Begin the Beguine by: Artie Shaw
February 21, 2005
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Begin the Beguine
A ten CD set which gives a comprehensive overview of Artie Shaw's bands both small and large from the early Brunswicks until the end of the Second World War at a very reasonable price, this collection seems too good to be true! There is however a downside in that no discographical details are included and, much more importantly, all the tracks are taken from studio sessions. This is a pity as Shaw's bands very often sound better when recorded 'live' and in a number of cases airshot versions could well have been substituted for inferior studio tracks - 'Moonray' and 'Begin the Beguine' for example.

This carping apart, the set as a whole is a delight from beginning to end. Through one man's music we can hear the first tentative sounds ... Read More:
