This box set of three albums (also available separately, at the time of writing) is obviously designed as an introduction for those who are unfamiliar with good orchestral easy listening in general or the James Last orchestra in particular. In turn it showcases the orchestra in classical, party and pop standards modes (if you want the polkas, jigs and reels you'll have to look elsewhere). James Last's treatment of the classical music pops was always to add bass and percussion rhythm, and usually either chorus (for the dreamy classics) or brass (for the more spectacular tunes). Generally very COOL mix of funky, jazzy, bossa-nova-ish, X-mas songs. Makes for a great excuse to jump around and shake your stuff - go on burn those mince pies!!!!

Gordon Goodwin has assembled a group of truly world class musicians, in technical ability, in their ability to blend with each other to form the glorious sounds on this album and in their ability to just SWING!! This is their best release since 'Swingin' For The Fences' and is anything but background music - from the opening number, this music grabs you and refuses to let go. Forget toe-tapping, it'll have you dancing around your home like some kind of maniac. Where Goodwin's band comes alive is in the sheer energy they put into each track - even the slower numbers have a tangible electricity to them. When you're tired of just "the best of" and don't want to go to the trouble to collect the complete Glenn Miller, this is about the best collection on the market. I'm still surprised to find items like the childish "Booglie-Wooglie Piggy" or "the Kiss Polka" included in the set ("Sweeter than the Sweetest" and "At the President's Birthday Ball" come to mind as musically better alternatives), but all in all there's a good balance between the swinging Mr. Miller and the more commercial things he waxed. I still find it incomprehensible that Miller employed such mediocre singers (Marion Hutton and Ray Eberle), who are only palatable when they are singing together with The Modernaires, and therefore I find it a pity that the 1937-1938 Decca and Brunswick ... Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall Concert was a major event, not least for the prestigious nature of the venue, but it was recorded almost as an afterthought, and first saw the light of day over a decade later. It was reissued by Avid in their Gold Remasters series, and is now repackaged as part of a 4-CD set, with a total running time of over 5 hours. The quality of the remastering is quite superb, with a degree of clarity and a spacious acoustic which makes prolonged listening effortless. Hearing these performances again, I was struck by the sense of occasion that is conveyed by the presence of the very appreciative audience. In contrast to the previous reviewer on this page, unfortunately I have to say how disappointed I was with this collection. Before I launch into my reasons, firstly I must just say that I am writing this review as a general music fan with my own observations regarding this recording, rather than pretending to be an authority on the legend that is Glenn Miller. My suspicions with this recording were raised within the opening few bars of the first track 'In The Mood', which is obviously in stereo. Since the cream of Miller's recordings were made around 1940 (some 15 years before stereo recordings were being introduced) I have to start here by questioning the authenticity of at least some of the recordings on this CD. A great band and the well balanced mono sound is superb, as you would expect of Basie at his prime. Better than the original discs, my wife even likes this big band sound! (as does the parrot!) Much of it has unfamiliar titles but very familiar tunes, the Basie we hear all the time on the radio of course! A class act but then all the bands that survived to the late 50's and beyond had that in common (compare with Kenton at the Tropicana, the Herman 1963 Philips disc etc). Buy it!

I must admit I hadn't heard much Charlie Parker before buying this album as an introduction to bebops founder and one of the world's finest saxophonists to date. After listening to both CD's in this double set right through various times I was addicted and I'm sure I shall buy much more of his work very soon. Many of the bebop enthusiasts I know agreed that the choice of song's on this album were very well selected and clearly outline the saxophonists different stages in his musical career. I recommend this album to diehard bebop fans and everyone else alike either to hear the amazing musicianship, unpressedented composing skills or just to know where every musician in the world hs gained some kind of influence. Pure Genious!!!

This truly beautiful album by "Hansi" was first released in 1979 under the title "Christmas Classics" and reissued in the mid 1980's on CD under the same title. It has now re-appeared as The Christmas Album giving the impression that this is the only Christmas album by "Hansi". As the previous reviewer states there is also the "Midnight" album and also "Christmas Dancing" and a very unusual album called simply "Peace" on which appear a number of vocalists including Engelbert Humperdinck,Chris De Burgh and pianist Richard Clayderman among a number of other European artists.
