Running time approx 142 minutes! 47 selections and includes many medleys too. Fully annotated by Geoff Milne who has been responsible for numerous excellent CDs for Jasmine in recent years. There are no fewer than 11 Frank Loesser compositions dating from Feb 1951 and 5 Cole Porter songs too. The sound quality throughout is excellent and the whole collection reminds us of a great pianist who was on the popular music scene for 60 years. These Decca recordings have been long awaited.

Luis Russell led one of the hottest black bands in New York. I first heard these tracks on 78, almost all being issued in England on the Parlophone Rhythm Style Series, and was impressed then at the sheer vitality of them. The sound leapt out of the grooves, and to hear the band in the flesh must have been an awe-inspiring experience. At the heart lay the rhythm section, particularly Pops Foster on bass, who could almost have been standing in front for the recording, so well was his slap bass style of playing captured. The other two mainstays on most of the tracks were Henry "Red" Allen on trumpet and J.C. Higginbotham on trombone, both with highly individual styles, Allen's fiery playing contrasting with the abrasive but accomplished trombone. ... Read More:

"Ella and Basie!" is a triumph in most respects. A monumental meeting of three giants of swing music. First of all, not much needs to be said at all of the personnel involved, other than it meets the high standards already set by all involved. The band are on no less than top form, and absolutely breeze through the material, tighter than ever. This represents possibly the best ever, in my opinion, of the New Testament Basie band: The rhythm section by now, have established a close rapport and support the band superbly, the understated/underrated chunking of Freddie Green's guitar, the exuberant rock solid thumping of Sonny Payne's drums, and the charismatic touches of Basie's piano, it's all here. I love biopics and so I when I requested for Xmas 'The Benny Goodman Story' I expected to see Steve Allen and Donna Reed.I was disappointed to receive this documentary instead but that was before I watched it. It's a fascinating account of the great man's life and music with wonderful illustrations of a range of Big Band greats and famous performances. It's recommended for all fans of swing music and American musical history. I've enjoyed it about 10 times already.

My main problem with this cd is that "Temptation" by Red Ingle is not included, I'll let that slide for the brilliant "Civilisation", for it is one of my most favourite songs and possibly one of the best songs ever written. Otherwise fans of Ennio Moricones work will probably love this cd and the music perfectly encapsulates the mood of this disturbing and melancholic movie.

The umpteenth collection of "the best of". I wonder why people still buy this kind of cynically thrown together products at all (because they don't care or don't know?); If you want to know what Miller was really about (warts and all) buy "the Golden Years": four discs with a generous helping of Miller's "best of" with a lot that's even better (and sometimes worse) thrown in for good measure.
