There is little for me to add to the other glowing reviews on this cd set; the recordings were made between the early Thirties and mid to late Forties; there are some great surprises such as the spectacularly beautiful version of "All the Things You Are" by Carroll Gibbons / Anne Lenner (which outclasses both Tommy Dorsey's and Artie Shaw's recordings from late 1939), the warmly sentimental version of Ted Heath's "That Lovely Weekend" by Geraldo and a very fine version of "From Me To You" by that unbeatable tandem of Lew Stone and Al Bowlly.
There are also some gripes: first, the inclusion of five Jimmy Messene songs is a sad mistake, he is quite simply a terrible singer! Denny Dennis would have been a much better choice; second, ... Read More:

There have been quite a few bad reviews about this album, but having read them and still brought the album and listened to it myself, I'm not sure what they were listening to but I don't think it was this. I love this album, especially, Suggs, George Harrision, Mark Knopfler and J-Kay but not a single track disappoints. A really enjoyable album to relax to or dance to try it for yourself and make your own decision.

The reviews below are, IMO, pretty churlish for what is one of the great live albums of all time, in -any- genre.

The original 'Ellington at Newport' LP consisted of the legendary Diminuendo/Crescendo In Blue performance (of which more in a bit), plus some re-recorded stuff with overdubbed applause, a shoddy and largely faked document of what was reportedly one of the stonkingest live gigs in history. The Columbia team have hunted down the original tapes and reconstructed the entire concert, bum notes and all. (The bum notes were the reason why Columbia insisted on Ellington rerecording a lot of the stuff in the studio a few days later. This CD includes the re-recordings, but restores the original performances, so nobody feels ... Read More:

It's a good mix; interesting to be able to collect covers of both 1940s standards plus Queen and the Bee Gees.

I guess it's a good complement to your Harry Connick collection, seeing as Buble don't cover When Harry Met Sally tunes, and the kid sounds almost exactly like Connick did 20 years ago!

Nice, expressive, archetypal shmaltz.

The great thing about Miles Davis was that his trumpet playing was so transcendent. He's probably the only jazz player whose albums frequently appear in top 100 rock lists. I fail to see how anyone could not take the lilting sentiments of 'Porgy & Bess' to heart no matter what your musical tastes.

The 'Buzzard Song' opens the album with a grooving bass line by Paul Chambers, cleverly imitated by a tuba that follows suit (how many albums have you heard with a grooving tuba?). Then the lyrical note changes of 'Bess, You Is My Woman', before one of the highlights of the album, 'Gone'. This is something of a departure from Gershwin's opera itself, but the backing players relish the opportunity for some pure jazz playing, topped off with Jones's ... Read More:

When Benny Green appeared at New York's famed Carnegie Hall on 16th January 1938 it was the first occasion a jazz orchestra had played its rarified environs - previously the exclusive home of classical music. However, Goodman's increasing popularity ensured a sell-out performance, leaving no doubt that the growing swing dance band craze should no longer be ignored.

Recording the concert was almost an afterthought but despite the availability of relatively crude technology, the outcome was acceptable. However, the filed acetates were not rediscovered until 1950 when their transfer to vinyl resulted in a million-plus selling album-set. The lost back-up aluminium masters were finally located in 1998 and formed the basis for a CD set released by Sony the following ... Read More:

This very moderately priced box of extremely interesting and diverse jazz performances doesn't get 5 stars from me only because it is not sufficiently equipped with the recording information...

Otherwise, it's a good buy indeed, with music mixing swing, cool, be-bop, hard-bop and other styles very freely, to suite the tastes of the more liberal jazz fans who love challenges.

"Big Swing Face" is one of Buddy's more popular albums, and I would certainly describe it as a classic. I first heard Buddy Rich when I was a kid when an older cousin of mine played me some of his LPs. Needless to say, I was mesmerised, and spent the next four decades of my life as a drummer.

This CD version also contains tracks that are not on the original LP release, which I still own. Even today, this recording remains one of my all-time favourite Rich albums. You can really feel the atmosphere of the gig, and the band just groove so well. His music crossed categories, and attracted a huge audience, and even if you're not into jazz, or drumming for that matter, you will love this album.

I was fortunate enough to see the Buddy Rich Big Band on two occasions ... Read More:

Music : Ultra-Lounge: Christmas Cocktails Part Two
This album is great! Possibly a better selection that Volumne 1, though they complement each other very well. Buy both if you like your seasonal lounge slightly skewed. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without hearing Bob Atcher and the Dining Sisters singing 'Christmas Island' - an absolute tiki classic. On the boring technical side, the digital remastered sound on these and all the Ultra Lounge albums is superb.
