In commissioning his long time (cinematic) music director Dick Hyman, to arrange and conduct the soundtrack to his film of the same name, Woody Allen has achieved an unparelleled authenicity unmatched by his contemporary film making peers.

Hyman's arrangements, encompassing Howard Alden's guitar parts, make for a sympathetic and nostalgic return trip to an era of unquestionably great music. Whilst Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's contribution is limited to just the one number (Mystery Pacific), the overall feel of this jaunty and uplifting soundtrack is overwhelmingly Reinhardt - which is appropriate - given actor Sean Penn's character in the film is that of the "world's second greatest ever guitar player" (of the ... I don't like jazz. I want to, but I don't. I bought this because it was mentioned in a book called iPod Therefore I Am. It was described as being a weird jazz arrangement by a 21 piece band with demented time signature changes. It sounded interesting so I took a flutter on it. And I'm pleased that I did.

To me it sounds like a combination of The Avengers TV theme and a plodding movie Western theme. I don't understand music so the time changes are invisible to me but I can hear the shifting dynamics. And the five trumpet players together make a unique sound.

Very strange, very '60's and quite enjoyable. At first I thought Indian Lady was by far and away the best track but Turkish Bath is now starting to sound even ... Read More:

A huge inspiration of my guitar playing, every guitarist should own it. But its not merely a 'guitar album', I know plenty of people who don't play any instrument who love this. You should already own it.

The only thing I will regret in my life is not being able to see and hear this band live in person in London back in February 1972. I had the Decca Phase Four stereo 2 LP set and when I visited Brittan in 2005 I played them again but found the poor balance detracted from the thought of bringing them back with me to Australia and buying a turntable to play them again.
Now this is no longer necessary and it seems with no to do Michael Dutton has cleaned up the often very poor balance Decca went to press with. So much so those of you who have never heard the LP's will just think it's a bit closely miked but it seemed to me it was well over the top of the tape's dynamic range especially the very fiery numbers such ... I have owned this CD for more than 3 years and it is still the best Buble has ever done. I saw him sing most of the tracks at Ronnie Scotts and even now my friends accompanying me that night still talk fondly of the occasion. At this bargain price (feb 2008) you cannot afford to be without it. Everyone will ask you who is singing it. It is just wonderful music. All the songs are beautifully arranged and exceptionally well sung. I listen to it again and again without tiring of it.

If the house ever burned down, this would be the one thing that I would rush in to save. Although some of these recordings are nearly 70 years old, the music is timeless. Without doubt, these recordings represent not only the apogee of the Count's recordings but the whole Swing Era. Featuring such legends as Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Sweets Edison and the famous "All American " rythmn section of Basie / Page / Greene / Jones, it is safe to say that there is not a duff track on this 4 CD box set. In addition, there are plenty of recordings by the great Jimmy Rushing - check out "Harvard Blue." What can surely be better than this track ?
Although superior transfers may be available and there are some notable omissions (the wonderful version of "Honeysuckle ... Read More:

A great artist in his exuberant, "Basieish" youth, Lester Young often proved that in his mature years he could add to the subtlety and feeling, without sacrifising any of the rhythmical power.
How could anyone ever have believed that his post WW-II years were a throwaway alltogether?

Here, propelled by Peterson's fine group, The Pres swings hard, starting with the mighty "Ad Lib Blues" but in the very next song, beautiful ballad "I Can't Get Started", shows the greatest strength of his playing on this CD. The name of the game is emotion, reached through melodic innovativeness and rhythmical subtlety.

Interestingly enough, in the company of a more emotional Teddy Wilson on another masterpiece from the 50's (Pres and Teddy , Young showed ... Read More:

Despite being sub-titled 40 greatest hits, this compilation (brilliant though it is) does not include Pistol packing mama, Don't fence me in or Hot time in the town of Berlin, which were three of their biggest hits with Bing Crosby, nor does it include Ferryboat serenade, I can dream can't I, I wanna be loved or I'll be with you in apple blossom time.

However, as these brilliant sisters clocked up well over 100 hits in the American charts, no compilation could possibly contain all of them and the omission of some obvious songs (available elsewhere) leaves more room for some of their other hits that sometimes get overlooked but which are also interesting.

Among the classic songs here are their number one hits Bie mir bist der schoen, Shoo-shoo baby, ... Read More:
