This 78-minute CD is an ideal entry-point into Sun Ra's astonishing and expansive catalogue numbering around 200 albums.
There are 18 tracks arranged in chronological order and drawn from Sun Ra's Saturn label with the exception of 'We Will Wait For You' recorded for the film 'Space Is The Place'. It's fascinating to hear how Sun Ra's music evolved over the period 1956-73.
Sun Ra's 'Greatest Hits'(which probably reached the charts only on Saturn!) should suffice for anyone who wants just one CD of this remarkable composer and bandleader in their collection, but it's also a perfect launching pad for those who want to explore further.

This is one of my favourite Harry Connick Jr albums I possess. He clearly relishes what he does as his vocal performance on here is top quality. His arrangements are pretty sharp too. He fuses his own songs with old jazz standards and brings them together in an excellent package.

It starts off at a gallop with the impressive 'Nowhere With Love' then continues in the same vein with 'Come By Me' and 'Charade' and finishes off with the wonderful rendition of 'Cry Me A River' and 'Love For Sale'. My favourites on here are the opening two tracks 'Nowhere With Love', 'Come By Me' and possibly 'Time After Time'.

Whenever I listen to this album, it brings a smile to my face and makes me feel good inside. All the arrangements and ... Read More:

This is a very good compilation. For those who do not know the work of Bix this is a very nice introduction. The liner notes give a brief history of the man and tell enough to generate an interest. The CDs are nicely presented in a double box and inserted into an outer sleeve. The music it's self is guaranteed to set your toes tapping. There is a good representation of Bix's style and shows his work from small group to orchestra. Well worth the cash layout this makes an excellant addition to any collection. I hope to see more from the label, Primo.

The death Of Billy Strayhorn was an incalculable loss, not only to the Duke Ellington Orchestra but to Jazz and Popular music as well. The Musical Chemistry between Ellington and Strayhorn, longtime musical collaboraters, has been well documented, Strayhorn selflessly allowing Ellington to take the credit for his own compositions on occassions. This Album was Duke and his Orchestra's personal tribute to the man who had contributed so many compositions to the band which ended ranging outwards and beyond to become recognised standards for Jazz musicians the world over. Take the A Train, Lush Life, Chelsea Bridge to name but a few. This Album is a fitting Tribute to the Genius of Strayhorn, and the Orchestra needless to say provide a performance that does him ... Drum battles between Krupa and Rich were always exciting, but this has something more.It is not a battle, more a collaboration. Although both swing-based their styles are very different.Rich was an unleashed monster whose subtler touches were often overlooked, whilst Krupa was the most musical of drummers who also had a magic that made the simplest beat something special. The two drummers loved each other, and it shows on this album.Their individual tracks are great but Bernie's Tune is the killer.Free-flowing,inventive and exciting drumming leading in to great solos from the guys in the ensemble. When the other musicians kick in Krupa remains to back them and then Rich takes over for the final choruses. This section shows most markedly their two styles....Krupa ... Read More:

When I was at college my father took me to see Buddy Rich and his Big Band in South London (and they really were the bees knees). Consequently, when I learned about this album from reading Neil Peart's books and being a fan of both Buddy Rich and Neil Peart, I'd thought I'd check it out. What a fabulous album! All the drummers play brilliantly, and more importantly, FOR THE SONG and the Big Band themselves are excellent and very tight. Highly recommended.

This is easily the most highly-anticipated big band record of the past several years (just check the internet - the buzz is incredible). It seems like the hype for a new BPB record gets started the day after the release of the most recent. Gordon and his L.A. wrecking crew have managed to pull off a nearly impossible feat - to top your last two efforts. I have had the good fortune of being able to hear some of the tracks (almost in their entirety) before the release -- and all I can say is... DAMN. I think people will be completely blown away by this record.

There are a lot of Generation-Y superlatives out there one could use to describe this band. One is "sick". Yet another is "nails". Whatever the case, this band is both -- and the bottom line ... Read More:
