There will be some younger rips who have never heard of this band of 5 young men from Salisbury in Wiltshire in England, but what a great deal of amazing music they have missed. Along with their side-kicks from nearby Andover in The Troggs, together, these two 'West Country Bands' virtually dominated the UK Top 40 from 1966 and into the early 1970's. Agreed, I bought this for my wife who is a massive fan still to this day, and although the tracks are the same we were disappointed in getting a black and white picture of the band on the CD cover rather then this lush, colour jobby. More AFBF material - this time from British concerts Anyone interested in Blues will have to buy this one. I wasn't aware that the 1964 show was recorded in the UK although I suspected it might have been when a Sonny Boy clip surfaced on YouTube. The cheering that greets Howlin Wolf is extremely heartwarming - he then proceeds to lay down Smokestack Lightnin - unavailable anywhere else on film as far as I know - and Don't Laugh at Me. Lightnin Hopkins is in there too while Sugar Pie Desanto does a couple of spirited performances Also from 1964 (but not part of the AFBF series) are two songs apiece from Muddy Waters and Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the Blues and Gospel Caravan from a now-closed railway station in Manchester. ... A welcome budget price collection by one of the most charismatic and influential blues artists of all time. Many of Wolf's best known numbers are here, commencing with 'How Many More Years' from his first session in 1951 in Sam Phillips' Memphis studio, and continuing through the 1954 to 1965 period with Chess Records. The material is licensed from MCA, and therefore in excellent sound quality, with stereo mixes being used on some of the later dates. Just reading the titles reveals that most of the essential tracks are present, including the ones that were to feature strongly in the white blues boom of the 1960s: 'The Little Red Rooster', 'Spoonful', 'Killing Floor', and the inevitable 'Smokestack Lightnin''. Why is it when you tell the common-or-garden Rod Stewart fan that their idol sings on two of Jeff Beck's finest albums, they look at you as if you're the village idiot? Not that this album or 'Truth' need their sales to be increased by Rod's status in the band, but it's just that those people think you're having a laugh, when in fact you're trying to do them a favour. But never mind, it's their loss, and whilst Rod might be billed as 'vocalist extraordinaire,' he isn't the only 'name' on here, there's Ronny Wood and Nicky Hopkins, too; and Tony Newman was quite a well-renowned and straight-ahead rock drummer, too. Whilst I admire Chris Rea's ambition I fear the scope was too great and he stretched himself too far. From 11 CDs I found only 11 songs of top notch material. The majority of the rest was rather generic needing further effort applied or simply forgotten all together. Therefore it's quite a hefty sum to pay out when the majority of it is so unrewarding. Instead I'd recommend people save their money for the Blue Jukebox album which is a far more focused and rewarding experience.

This is a great album, my personal Santana favourite. However, there is nothing to suggest on the box that this album has actually been remastered, or that anything has been done to 'buff up' the sound, despite another reviewer's praise for the improved sound quality on this release. Maybe this is just a reissue rather than a remaster. If it were the latter surely that fact would be advertised on the packaging.

This is without a doubt the best White Stripes album. Where as elephant recieved much critical acclaim and gave them the success they earned, this album seems to not start where elephant left off. The White Stripes prove with this album that they are not a one trick pony. Instead of making another classic modern guitar album like elephant, they decide to make an album mainly of songs on paino and other random instruments. This album is very experimental but its not experimental for the sake of it, instead its experimental in order to adapt and modify their sound.This album features many great singles such as my doorbell, and some great songs like the nurse and little ghost. I guess the first thing that struck me was the overall look of the album; a cover containing simple shapes surrounding Jack and Meg (Meg looks about 13) and a Dutch name. De Stijl. That's alienating an audience straight away really...having a name people will be unable to pronounce. So flipping through the sleeve I find some interesting ideas and quotations about this weird shapely art they've used for the cover...the artists involved are Paul Overy, Gerrit Rietveld, Theo Van Deosburg and Vilmos Huszar...for all you Google kids. After hearing/reading/listening to this album absolutely spellbound, I was left with tears in my eyes as the final song, "There's a bright side somewhere", was playing. The brilliant musicianship, the simplicity of the music, and the expression of hope in this whole album, touched me so deeply. And that's what I want from Ry Cooder: to hear him and enjoy the sound, but also to identify with him, and to be taken on his journey with him through each and every one of his recordings. I can always trust him to speak directly to me through his music. "My Name Is Buddy" is no exception. Thanks Ry Cooder for being true on your journey, and giving me a legacy of music that never dissappoints as long as my ears, mind and heart are open to receive.
