191.Jump Back - Best of '71-'93 by: Rolling Stones

Music : Jump Back - Best of '71-'93
This album starts, aptly enough, with 'Start Me Up', the song which the Rolling Stones sold to Microsoft in order to keep Keith Richards in drug money. It is a mediocre slice of radio-friendly rock, and easily one of the most underwhelming songs the Rolling Stones have ever released.

'Brown Sugar' sounds like what it is: a completely unashamed rip-off of Rhythm and Blues which was pioneered and perfected by far superior black musicians, whilst 'Harlem Shuffle', originally recorded by Bob and Earl is a tragic and cruel massacre to rival anything planned by Pol Pot or Saddam Hussein. Please just skip it, and listen to the original instead, for your own sakes.

This theme of pilfering black culture leads us nicely onto ... Read More:

I was hesitant about buying this new album of Otis Taylor's because I'm not a big fan of the banjo as an instrument but I so enjoyed his "Double V" and "Definition of a Circle" albums that I decided to see if he could bring his gorgeous version of the blues to an album dominated by an instrument I'm not too keen on.

Many of the songs on the album, understandably, are dominated by the banjo and I'm afraid I'm not really that keen on them - personal taste really - even if Otis tries hard to make them bluesy. The opening of the album is particularly affected, with the first three tracks all being ones that displease me.

After this banjo-heavy opening, Otis begins to mix in other instruments and more variety into the arrangements ... Read More:

While 'Then Play On' is a masterpiece, beware that this is not a straight reissue of the original UK release - 2 tracks are missing and 'Oh Well' has been grafted in to a revised running order, as was done on European & US releases at time of issue. However, it will have to do until WEA or an enlightened re-issue specialist decides to issue the album in its entirity - hopefully boosted by the 'Oh Well' and 'Green Manalishi' singles.
In the meantime, as other reviewers say, marvel in the talent on show - a band at their peak.

I defy you to find four opening tracks better than what was once side one of Dixie Chicken. Ideally, buy it with its successor, 'Feats Don't Fail Me Now'.

In the dark days before punk's scorched earth policy, Little Feat were one of the few saving graces. An unassumedly multi-racial band that welded together funk, soul and country, fronted by their leader Lowell George. Unfortunately, Lowell died prematurely and these albums represent the peak of the band's career.

From the comedic title track and 'Fat Man In the Bathtub', the soulful blues of 'On Your Way Down' and 'Two Trains' to the stoned run-out of 'Lafayette Railroad', it doesn't put a foot wrong.

If you like rock with the roll still in it, you won't regret buying ... Read More:

This is mainly a covers album so don't expect too much in the way of new material however, it must be said that Jeff Healey's style was unique enough in its own right.

This is packed with good bluesy renditions of classics like "Run Through The Jungle" & a really neat version of "Badge" & also "Angel" & packs a decent punch.

Check it out.

What can I say about Volume One of the Nuggets compilation that hasn't already been said, this album after all is still one of the most important purchases I have ever made.

The cheap price tag of this collection on its own is quite frankly daft, but with the array of quality songs from relatively unknown bands being quite literally immense on this compilation, as a starting point you can't really do much better. So in short, you have no excuse, you need to have this compilation in your collection now.

Originally compiled and released in 1972 on the Sire Record label, by Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman with help from Lenny Kaye, Nuggets is a superb gateway to the 1960's Psychedelic and Garage scenes. I play at least 5 songs from this ... Read More:

As I write this review I read an email which said Bo Diddley had passed away after a long illness.
With only 2 Top 40 entries in the U K Diddley sold less than Chuck Berry but was just as influential.
He's probably a household name by now and certainly was at the time of the Stones and Yardbirds. And not forgetting the Pretty Things whose name came from a Bo song.
Essential though to Bo Diddley achieving any sort of fame were whites-that is even before the Stones there was Buddy Holly.
His music remained in the same turf-there was no attempts to launch himself as a soul singer.
The music's always going to be there

In spite of an atrocious version of Oh no not my baby the Manfreds made important music. They would receive publishers demos of all the new Dylan songs becaue Dylan rated them.
Doo Wah Diddy Diddy was I suppose the comedy side of a group who had started as The Mann Hugg Blues Brothers but they topped the U S chart with this one and it made more sense than their cover of Maxine Brown's uptown soul song.
Spltting into other factions like Paul Jones' solo career the Earth Band and McGuiness Flint made sure that Manfred Mann was never forgotten.
Though Manfred was not the singer another South African scored in the 70s -John Kongos-who was a singer
It was I suppose a first time for a big selling band to replace its original singer and still score No 1 hits!

How come all this extra stuff has sat in boxes in some
darkened cupboard for the last 35 years ??? It's not as though the original LP had no spare space. Well anyone thinking of dabbling with drugs should listen to this. I'm not an advocate of putting out anything and everything that an artist ever recorded but this 2CD set is a real education. There is everything here from truely stellar brilliance to
slow and dull mediocrity ; fortunately much more of the former. All these
years later we are reminded of what a talent PFK was but how he
squandered his talents. A very tragic tale.
