Forget heavy metal and led zepplin - Jeff has more balls in his little finger than all all the 'great' guitar players except than perhaps Jimi himself. Pure testosterone. The perfect driving music - no speed limit.

Jeff can change from thumping rock distortion to beautiful haunting bends and swoops - in pitch perfect highs and lows. Not to go through the tracks one by one - but this is Jeff hitting a high he has hinted at all his career. Never one to copy old riffs and cliches - he has been a unique talent ever since he picked up a 6 string. It's a change to see an artist not go down the commercial route just for the money.. No Frog Songs or Wonderful Tonights - just great guitar.

Always on the lookout for something new and interesting I bought this on the strength of the above review, and having heard one or two comments about this singer but not remembering where. It is quite a surprising experience to listen to this album for the first time - Pete's voice is unique and harks back to country balladeers of the 40s and 50s. He sings in an almost falsetto but it isn't quite that - there are touches of early Dylan and Woody Guthrie and an amalgam of earthy country styles that ends up in his own very individual style. I would love to see him live to get more of a handle on this, as I'm not sure this album gives a true picture of him. It is very retro and almost verges on the pastiche, but just about pulls it off. Etta James is one of my all time favourite female singers and this album is brilliant and it just so happens it is a bargain. For those more dedicated fans I would suggest the complete chess recordings, however, you cannot go wrong by having this in your collection and for those unfamiliar with Etta James, this is a great introduction, which could get you hooked!

Depend who this is supposed to be essential do-the newcomer to the Urban blues which influenced the British blues bands or essential as the biggest songs are here.Big via other people not especially Muddy who I don't think troubled the pop charts.
Which is besides the point-the pop charts are only a mirror to public taste.
In the U K Muddy waters was represnted in the 50s by a solitary EP which retailed at the same price as Cliff Richard or Elvis so it died a death and was only there because Decca were licensing product from Chess having only just obttained the catalog.
Muddy Waters was also a very unlikely artist to aim his music at the charts for the simple reason that while he may have introduced Chuck Berry to Chess he was not aiming ... Read More:

Lucinda's gifted voice is beyond words, so visualise this. You are watching a film on TV or at the cinema and the scene, transfers an overwhelming emotion, that floods you with compassion, maybe tears, physically, you have goose bumps, that are more like goose mountains, you feel so touched, at what you have just seen. Keep with that emotion, that feeling and multiply it again and again, when listening to A Hundred Thousand Angels. This is no ordinary song, it totally moves you. For those that grieve, it provides, peace, reassurance and love. One day, its true gift of love will be a recital at the passing of loved ones and tears and emotions will transfer yet again, at the blessing of saying goodbye to a loved one

Rory Gallagher is the greatest performer I have ever seen.My first Gallagher gig was at the Free Trade Hall in 1977 when he tore the place apart with an amazing live show full of energy and guitar playing mostly on his signature Strat. He had this presence on stage and used to charge around running to the edge of the stage to meet his audience. After the gig the front ten rows of seats were flattened.

He toured extensively around the world and I reckon on the street he is the peoples choice over someone like Eric Clapton.
This CD goes a long way to capture the energy of Rory and I think is far better than the "Big Guns" compilation. Some of my personal favourites are on here and the choice of tunes covers Rory's rock, blues, jazz and acoustic material. ... Read More:

I think that ZZ Top are a very good band and they remain one of my favorite bands of all-time. this is one great collection and they made great blues music in the 1970s and the 1980s. here are my comments about most of the songs. GIMME ALL YOUR LOVING this is a really great song and is my 2nd favorite song on the entire cd. SHARP DRESSED MAN this is pretty great too, but probably my 5th favorite. ROUGH BOY is a ballad that is too slow and too sad for me. TUSH is an excellent blues rocker remains one of my 5 favorites on this album. MY HEAD'S IN MISSISSPII is a blues rocker one of my favorites, PEARL NECKLACE not my fave, IM BAD IM NATHIONWIDE this is pretty good although remains as a 10th favorite or something. I AINT CRAZY ABOUT VIVA LAS VEGAS, DOUBLEBACK is a pretty ... Read More:

Troubadour would have been appealing even if it were an instrumental album, on account of the delicious instrumental textures. Hey Baby charms the listener with its intricate guitar whilst Travelin' Light is a rhythmic up-tempo excursion with hypnotic percussion. One of the longest tracks is You Got Something, a yearning love song with brilliant instrumental interplay.

The romantic Ride Me High is a masterpiece of expressive guitar and percussion, the brief track Hold On is a slow bluesy interlude and then there's the original of Cocaine with its powerful rock guitar riffs which became a great hit for Eric Clapton. I'm A Gypsy Man has a nervous, jerky rhythmic pattern whilst The Woman That Got Away is an up-tempo blues track with impressive piano. The whining guitar ... Read More:

I love Elkie Brooks' music and this certainly captures some of her finer moments.

But a 'Best Of' compilation can only cherry pick the tracks that have come from a long line of albums, which in themselves show the style of the singer at that time.

So whilst these tracks are great to listen to, do yourself a favour and pick a couple of her other albums *first* - then come back to this one to get all the great tracks in one place, but having the background to really appreciate them.
