The latest album from shock-rockers Marilyn Manson is something of a loose end. Twiggy Rameirez has departed, and with him so have the more melodic, slightly softer songs that the band have excelled at in the past (most notably on 'Mechanical Animals').

Also, Manson no longer seems to have as valid a point to make. 'Antichrist Superstar', their/his first major hit record, was the Ziggy Stardust of the nineties - a patchwork industrial thrash fest that sent shockwaves across the entire western world. 'Mechanical Animals', by far their most evenly paced album to date, was a masterpiece study into commericalism and the disposable nature of celebrity. And where that album was in itself the most commerical and therefore accessable ... Read More:

This is one of those disappointing Fall albums that hits the spot during the high points, but singularly misses it for large parts of the album. I cannot bear either version of "White Line Fever" (/ "Insult Song"), and have never played either tack in their entirety - firm finger on the "skip" button.

"Das Boot" is kind of classy, but more in the vein of "mood music" than boppin' Fall stuff. Not the best, and not typical (if there is such material).

The overall sound of these musicians are deep and grungy, upbeat mostly, and not bad - it's just that Mark E obviously had a few off days when recording this, and the musicians he picked weren't quite inventive and talented enough (or were too intimidated) to carry Mr Smith.

OK. This album was recorded at a high point in a young JM's career. His playing and creativity were superb which is evident on this recording. So why three stars? The quality of the recording is that of a bootleg and as explained by the previous reviewer, this is effectively how it was recorded. By recording the live set in the room instead of via the sound system, the background noise is considerable, including a very annoying person telling everyone else to shut up throughout the set.

John's voice is muffled in places and echoes all the time which severely impacts on the more vocal tracks such as `May you never' and `Don't wanna know' . Nevertheless, on the more instrumental tracks the playing is as sublime as it always was in those ... Read More:

Hmmm. Bowie cover versions. Sounds like a good idea but the reality is another matter altogether. Sometimes Bowie covers can be truly excellent. I would include Beck's take on `Diamond Dogs' and Edwyn Collins sublime version of `The gospel according to Tony Day' in this category. At other times however they can be downright evil. And I don't mean evil in a good way! Blondie's version of `Heroes' and Culture Club's murder of `Starman' spring readily to mind.

Unfortunately, `Life beyond mars' an album full of Bowie cover versions, falls largely into the latter category. Despite the artists modernity, cited elsewhere as pioneers of electronica, some of these songs sound considerably more dated than the originals.

I'm giving the ... Read More:

This album made me go shakey at the hips, all kinds of new stuff, old tunes and the ones that you hear in all the most wickedest clubs when you've had one to many to speak to the DJ. Track 5 on CD1 is my fave, but won't be to everyone's taste due to the swearing.

Randy Newman has been one of America's finest satirist singer/songwriters for a long time. Having recently got into his music, after overcoming the idea of being too cool to listen to the man beind the Toy Story soundtrack, I found that there was an incredible, witty, melodic goldmine to be forraged.

Sail Away is fantastic from beginning to end. It zips by at such great speed not giving you time to really catch your breath and is over after half an hour. This may not sound positive but when each of the twelve tracks can amuse you at one point but later bring a tear to the eye you know that you have a good album.

Highlights? Well, it contains one of his finest tracks ever, Lonely At The Top; You Can Leave Your Hat On reminds us that Tom Jones ... Read More:
