Last year Avid brought out a 2-CD set called Ballroom Dancing - The Essential Collection. EMI Gold has now gone one better, literally, with a 3-CD set featuring 74 tracks from the forties and fifties. They've cast their net both sides of the Atlantic, and covered a wide variety of styles and dance rhythms. Since Amazon lists only the titles, I should tell you that the bands involved (in alphabetical order) are Ray Anthony, Les Brown, Jan Garber, Geraldo, Nat Gonella, Benny Goodman, Ken Hanna, Skitch Henderson, Woody Herman, Harry James, Stan Kenton, Sydney Lipton, Joe Loss, Enric Madriguera, Ken Mackintosh, Billy May, Lou Preager, Tommy Rogers, Edmundo Ros, Harry Roy, Jack Wallace, and Eric Winstone. This is without doubt a 5 star CD-box release - containing all 4 original V.U. albums; at a very fair price. I'm overall very satisfied with the sound; some may find the sound of "White Light / White Heat" a little hard to digest, but that was how the record was made. Apart from one track, all of the great "lost" album "VU" is also here; but strangely enough there is only one track from the other rarities compilation "Another View". CD 1 contains early demos of songs from the first album, and these tracks are mostly only historical interest. The 4 other CDs each contain an original album and plenty of contemporary bonus-tracks. An absolutely superb box set with a really good and informative booklet which should be really helpful to both new and old fans alike. As with most Free releases you cant help wondering what could have been if Koss could have been saved from himself but even more so with this one.Each disc is an absolute gem especially the live disc from the Croydon gig,but all discs throw up some absolute crackers especially Paul Rodgers solo take of Guardian Of The Universe.If I had to get rid every album except for one then this is without a doubt the one I would keep.

I have loved Doo Wop since I started collecting 50s Rock n Roll about 6 years ago. Through getting the `R&B hits of 195-` series on Indigo I became particularly attached to the laid back, sometimes mournful, sometimes playful, sometimes risqué style of this kind of music. These may have been the boy bands of the time, but the frisky and powerful deliverance of groups like the Clovers and the Dominoes were considered pretty shocking at the time. That power is slightly lost on this compilation as the sound quality is a bit lacking on the transfer to CD, but this is a cheap compilation so fair enough i suppose. or will ever be.This boxset contains more or less all their back catalogue,and runs the gamut from the early punkish singles like In The City through to the Stax/Motown influenced tracks from their final album The Gift such as Ghosts.Anyone who wants to form a band would do well to listen to this-all it takes a be a legendary group is great tunes,witty lyrics and crucially,knowing where to stop.If you like The Enemy,listen to their thuggish tune Aggro then this boxset and ask yourself if they are capable of expanding their sound in the same way The Jam did in the space of just 5 years.If The Enemy do anything the calibre of The Bitterest Pill or Beat Surrender i'll eat my hat.(if this review has been tainted by my dislike of The Enemy i apologise)

It includes tracks for more traditional and Cabaret belly dance, Drum solos, Tribal styles and fusion so, whether you're a devout drum solist or tenacious tribal fusionist, there really is something for everyone! The album includes some lovely old favourites and some brand new tracks from familiar names like Beats Antique and Phil Thornton. I welcome any Matt Monro issue that adds new items to my discography; in this three cd set there are very many overlaps however. What bugged me more is that recording dates and the accompanying orchestras are not mentioned at all; instead we get liner notes that list the movies from which the songs were taken; sometimes with too much artifice: Stranger In Paradise had been around since 1940 (with different words) before it was used in film; the same goes for Stardust, Chattanooga Choo Choo and some others; but the quality of the singing is beyond reproach, and in that it would be a good buy for newcomers to the Monro world, certainly at this price.

For some reason, this "budget box" of Shostakovich's symphonies gets the odd poor review, but I think its great. Although I have the Brilliant Classics Shostakovich box with the now "default" Barshai performances, I still frequently reach for this box in preference as it contains 10 CDs, not 27! No, really, the reason is that, in the main, these performances match Barshai. Conducted by Mariss Jansons with 8 different orchestras between 1988 and 2005, there is little noticeable difference in the sumptuous EMI sound quality throughout this impressive set. With a good booklet and a competitive price tag, this set is highly recommended.
