Music : Hello Starling: Limited Edition
This is my favourite album in the world. The only album of which I like every single song. 'Kathleen' is one of Josh's most amazing and most loved songs, 'Snow is Gone' never ceases to please...'Bright Smile' is simply beautiful and 'Bad Actress' is a little gem. I could go on and on...if you've never listened to Josh Ritter before you really should. Start with this album, like me. I also highly recommend "The Historical Conquests of...". Discover Josh Ritter :)

I bought this on a complete whim, not simply because it was cheap here on Amazon, but I'd been reading Barney Hoskins' expose of West Coast rock 'Hotel California' and Rick Nelson gets mentioned as a regular at The Troubadour. I remembered 'Garden Party' but didn't know any of his other 70's material with The Stone Canyon Band and this looked like a good summary.

And it is. RC & the SCB turn out to be a very credible and melodic outfit. I would guess that Nelson found it difficult to shake off his teen idol, rockabilly image and wasn't easily accepted as a bona fide West Coast rock cowboy. But this is a good, tight band (featuring soon-to-be Eagle Randy Meisner on bass)offering a good selection of Dylan covers and original Nelson ... Read More:

Dave Frishberg played with Al Cohn for a long time and made a wonderful album in the late 70s with Cohn and Bob Brookmeyer [You're a Lucky Guy]. Dave often commends Al Cohn in his liner notes so, on the basis that if one of the best musicians in jazz looks up to Al Cohn, I ordered this. Delightful. Cohn and Brookmeyer are a perfect match, the tunes are well chosen and the playing is incomparable. A little like unexpected sunshine in January - bright, welcome, changes your mood but is still definitely on the cool side. A record to make you feel good all day, and the facsimile album cover and 'record label' disc are an extra treat.

I am in agreement with Edmond ,this mix is when you need relief from a full on aural assault but still need something to chew on mentally. For the most part its a good example of a man holding his wilder emotions in check but still letting the beast emerge in bursts of controlled sonic exitment.I bought this thinking it would be a banging techno fest a la the Timewarp 3 mix but ended up just as pleased and have probably played it more.At the current price you'd be advised to purchase this now.

Music : You Gotta Go There to Come Back
This phonics installment takes them in a completely different direction from their last 3 rock based albums. with a slower tempo and more acoustic feel, it would not even be far-fetched to call this a 'blues' record.

Yet despite initial reservations and granted it took me a while to warm to this album, i definately like it now.

Ive never thought the phonics have been able to match the standard they set themselves with 'word gets around' (their debut album) and this is by no means in that league, but then again its probably the first album they've released post WGA that doesn't really try to be. madame helga is a more traditional offering from the phonics but other than that tunes such as 'maybe tommorrow' epitimise the record. ...
