Themependium is a creditable effort by Sony/BMG to produce a compilation of John barry's prolific music career. However, there is a but! Anyone purchasing this four disc set will be doing so because of a genuine desire to hear the great man at his musical best. What Sony/BMG have done is trawl through his extensive back catalogue to get a representative cross-section of John Barry's output and then fallen into the usual trap of using vocal chart versions where they exist rather than the instrumental arrangements. This I suspect is to make it more marketable to the general public even though - with no disrespect intended to Dame Shirley, Matt Monro and Donna Summer - these songs can readily be found on countless other albums. This is another great compilation from Trojan, every track is a classic from Big Youth's Screaming Target to the final track I. Roy's Dr. Phibbs. Essential listening

Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence are two of DM's best singles, and both are in this box. Each disc has an album's worth of remixes and B-sides, making this good value. Stand out tracks include: " Route 66 [Beatmasters Mix] " Personal Jesus [Acoustic] " Dangerous [Sensual Mix] (perhaps DM's best B side song) " Enjoy the Silence [The Quad: Final Mix] (because before this boxed set it was very hard to find on an official release)

A lot of boxed sets are little more than 'coffee table' CD collections. They have their greatest hits and a lot of filler and alternative versions (usually the same song with a different drum roll at the start). This collection is a must for anyone who wants to get into the Beach Boys in that it contains all the hits plus tracks to treasure on every disk. Most importantly it contains the nearest 'official' approximation to the original Smile Album we're likely to get which perfectly compliments the recent re-recording Wilson made with The Wondermints. Flat production? What is he gibbering about? I can't see anything dull, flat or lifeless in the production, in fact I actually find that other than the material up to but not including fragile (which always had quite bad sound quality) , the production has improved the sound quality quite noticably. But enough about that. The spread of music here was desirable for me, because, being 16, i had only just started getting into Yes and other prog rock about a year and a half ago. I was quite surprised by a lot of the tracks i had never heard, most notably the Drama stuff (I always presumed Anderson-less Yes would be mostly irrelevant, however it is positively thrilling and fresh). Who are these boxed sets that anthologize the work of a band or artist across the decades intended to cater for? Is it the newcomer who wants an instant collection and expects to find the cream of their recorded output on one disc? Or is it the collector who has all the albums but is anxious to own digital copies of early singles and rarities, and hopes to find previously unreleased gold dust? It seems the wary compiler has to steer a middle ground, whilst running the risk of alienating both parties. The cherry pickers don't want obscure early B-sides, the collectors resent buying loads of album tracks all over again to get to the goodies. I have just acquired this 4-disc boxed collection of selected tracks from James Last's extensive repertoire spanning four decades of his unique musical talent and, indeed, one of the discs is running on my media player as I type this review. As a long-standing 'afficionado' of the maestro and his orchestra, I could be accused of being biased, but as the chairman and secretary of the JL Appreciation Society said in one of the club's magazines, this set is a worthwhile addition to anyone's collection and I have to say,I wholeheartedly agree. Before the purchase, I was concerned that within the 4-disc set there would be considerable over-duplication of many of the tracks already featured on other albums from Hansi(as he is known to his fans), which I already ... Unlike some box sets this is not targeted at the completist who wants all of the outtakes etc. If you are a fan of Scott Walker but only have the first four solo albums plus the later stuff (Tilt etc) then this is a good purchase. It means you can cover off the best bits of his '60s Walker Bros and '70s solo career plus out of print (comparative) rarities like 'Til The Band Comes In and his four tracks from Nite Flites (which are sensational, by the way). If you are a Scott novice this box probably provides you with all the tracks you will need, since it contains the essential stuff as well. Each CD is based around a theme, making the listening experience a coherent one.
