A wonderful, nostalgic collection of great gallic tunes, famous and not so, full of melody and poignant lyrics. "J'attendrai" is a real classic.

This record is phenomenal. I am a jazz fan, but reckon it is pretty accessible for the non-jazz type as a good introduction to what your missing. The album has a sense of frivolity about it, as do most of Serge's, but this does not detract at all from the quality of the music. It is also not made frivolous to hide inadequacies elsewhere. Comparisons: certainly bears more than a few similarities to Matthew Herbert's Big Band album, although Serge does it much better. If you like Stan Getz/Astrud Gilberto, you'll probably like this. I'd say it also has a subtle latin edge to it, so if that floats your boat... My only regret is that I didn't find out about this album earlier.

'Couleur Cafe' is a companion compilation to the excellent compilation 'Comic Strip' - the latter focusing on Gainsbourg's most celebrated era in the mid to late 1960s that lead towards the critically revered concept LP 'The History of Melody Nelson.' This compilation generally focuses on Gainsbourg's early work, 19 of the 20 tracks emanting from the 1959 - 1964 period; it feels bizarre that one track from 1975 ('l'ami Caouette') is tacked on at the end - shouldn't that be on a companion compilation from 1971 onwards? Your first thought, following the instrumental version of 'cha cha cha du loup' that opens this compilation, will be "This sounds like the music to Austin Powers..." - this material feels very much of the era, though ... If you saw this show on stage, then be prepared to be instantly wafted back to a glorious night in the theatre. If not, then you'll regret for ever that you were not there. From (slightly) naughty songs to Bea Arthur classics like "The Man in the Moon ...." you won't be disappointed. And there are a few surprises too. I bet you didn't know that Bea had quite an accomplished career on the (almost) legitimate stage -- can you imagine her in a show based on the works of Kurt Weil ? Well, catch her in "Pirate Jenny" from "The Threepenny Opera" -- it's probably the best thing she's ever sung !
