This was the first Gainsbourg cd I bought, and I was hooked from the opening bars of "Requiem pour un con" and have since built up my collection. If you like 60's/70's pop, this should be amongst your collection. Every song on this disc is a classic piece of French pop music to be inspired by. Forget all the stories about the drink and women...just listen to this album and be converted.

I think this CD is great and I challenge anyone not to feel upbeat and happy after listening to 'Boum'. I'd recommend it for a Sunday afternoon or when you're out having a picnic...it just takes you to a different place. I absolutely agree with a previous reviewee that you could just close your eyes and be transported away to a cafe in rural France. Beautiful...

His voice and manner attracted and intrigued me enough to follow him up. He's gold alright. Redolent of Jeff Buckley a la hallelujah and not much else (maybe Buckley pere's song to the siren). anyway, get it, enjoy it

It's twenty years now since Lemper recorded her piéce de resistance. Though I have criticised her in the past for some of her Piaf and Dietrich interpretations (she murders "L'accordéoniste) here she is flawless. Only Lotte Lenya, and maybe Pia Colombo, reached this level of perfection. Moreover, as would happen quite a lot during her later career, Lemper took uncalculated risks by recording some of the lesser known works of Brecht and Weill: "Die Ballade von der sexuellen horigkeit" and "Zu Potsdam under den Eichen" and "Nanna's Lied" are difficult pieces to pull off, yet Lemper clears the hurdles with comparative ease. "Alabama Song" has to be here, of course, along with "Mackie Messer". But the two pearls sitting at the top of this very bejewelled crown ... Read More:
