I heartily agree this CD would be best enjoyed if the show had been seen in person. This review, though, is based off the CD alone.

Pro: Following the life of Peter Allan, the Boy From Oz is an undeniably enthusiastic rendering of his life, using songs Allan wrote.
Con: This enthusiasm, however, does sometimes bleed over into happy "cheese." Many people have never heard of Peter Allan until now, and his music does have a somewhat dated sound (70s).

Note: If you don't like Liza Minnelli's voice in real life, you won't like how she's rendered here - it's pretty good! The same goes for the style. The Boy from Oz might be a bit like "Hair" - you either love it or hate it.

Pro: His music was meant to be performed ... Read More:

This compilation features Marianne Faithfull mark 2, concentrating on her work from the groundbreaking album Broken English to the mid 90s A Secret Life, plus some previously unreleased material.

Disc One is by far the best as it draws on the brilliant trilogy of Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances and A Child's Adventure. All her rock-pop classics are here, from the controversial Why D'ya Do It, the moving Ballad Of Lucy Jordan and the catchy Intrigue, to The Blue Millionaire. The song Tenderness from Dangerous Acquaintances is a regrettable omission.

Disc Two contains a lot of her bluesy and art-song material, like Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, plus previously unavailable numbers like her exquisite interpretation of Gloomy Sunday. ... Read More:

Henry Cow and Slapp Happy are an acquired taste and this review does assume that the listener is so acclimatised. Desperate Straights, as originally released, is made up of tracks 12 to 24 on this compilation CD. Sandwiching two albums onto one CD probably made sense to someone at the record company. Listeners are fortunate that worthy did not also decide to change the track order so at least that part of history is preserved, not rewritten.

The musicality and politics of the bands put them at the far left-hand edge of the music/art spectrum in their time (approx '73 - '78 for Henry Cow). Highly avante-garde, elitist and insular, experimental and sometimes completely off the rails the Henry Cow line-up covered a lot of ground in five years of album releases. ... Read More:

Lena surprised the pop music world by taking her cover of One day at a time (an American hit for Cristy Lane) to the very top of the UK charts. It was her only UK hit although her albums always sold well when she was at the peak of her popularity in the seventies and the early eighties. Lena wrote the occasional song but mainly recorded covers of classic songs This anthology focuses on her covers of classic songs. The first CD generally consists of pop songs while the second CD generally consists of country and gospel songs although the division is not quite that clear-cut - for example, You needed me is on the first CD while Bridge over troubled water is on the second CD.

On the first CD, you will find Lena's versions of such classics as Without you (Nilsson), You needed ... Read More:

Cabaret songs are difficult to sing, in particular when they were written in the 1920's. Ute Lemper succeeds in making the music live again, and she recaptures some of hopes, desparation and anger of the time. Her ability to make the lyrics live through the music, and the music through the lyrics, is simply astounding. Unfortunately, it probably also means that one has to understand German in order to fully appreciate this recording: although Lemper's singing is a delight in itself, its effect is increased by the lyrics, and many of the nuances of this recording are accessible only through an understanding of the language. While this surely captures the spirit of cabaret music, it is a serious disadvantage for an otherwise splendid performance.

50.Ute Lemper- Punishing Kiss by: Ute Lemper

Music : Ute Lemper- Punishing Kiss
This album invites you not only to experience Ute's unique voice but also the talents of the songwriters involved. "Little Water Song" is formula Nick Cave, evocative of his duet with Kylie Minogue of a few years ago "Where the Wild Roses Grow", but Ute sings it with such touching simplicity it transcends the formula. "Tango Ballad" is a good violent dirty bitchy love song, but suffers from over-production. Hannon's voice is powerful and rich too, although the song is amillion miles away from any Weillian conception. "Passionate Fight" is a high point, a big flouncy ballad with plenty of bite and a great chorus. Quiter moments, like the voluptuous "Purple Avenue", the poignant "Couldn't You Keep that to Yourself", are exquisite ... Read More:
