Music : With Compliments

I got hold of this music on audio tape about 25 years ago when I was 15. I have listened to & enjoyed a lot of classical music since then and I have come to the inescapable conclusion that this CD includes the best music I have ever known or will probably ever know. The instrumental numbers in this CD are extremely powerful, melodious and soothing. It is music that is captivating and guaranteed to make you "forget all your troubles" while you are listening to it and thereafter. For a new listener of music, it is sure to instil the love of music into your life and stay with you for your entire life. It is difficult to put a price tag on this music CD, it is clearly priceless. The audio tape finally became unplayable- I must have ... Read More:

62.Get Away from Me: Parental Advisory by: Nellie McKay

Music : Get Away from Me: Parental Advisory
Nellie McKay shows in her charmingly-titled debut "Get Away From Me" that she is definitely one of the fresher musical voices out there. She has the energy and voice nailed down -- what her songs need is further maturity and a bit of songwriting polish. (Not to mention a rhyming dictionary)

In a sprawling two-disc album, McKay runs her full range of songs with rap (the gritty girlie-rap "Sari"), countryish pop (the amusing anti-male "It's A Pose"), punkish stuff ("Inner Peace"), classical instruments given a new spin (piano-based "Work Song"), poppish reggae ("David") and jazz ballads ("Won't U Please B Nice?"). What are the songs about? Blasting men, domestic dreams, politics, pets, masturbation and "my clonie."

I first heard this concert in the company of one of my more outré uncles. I was spellbound then and still am. Noel Coward at Las Vegas and its sister, Noel Coward in New York are definitely my first choice for companion on a desert Island, and prized dinner guest. The subtle/and not so subtle wit, and the smooth professionalism, have never been surpassed. Noel is as funny today, and as musically delightful, as he was all those years ago. I recommend these recordings to everyone and maintain that they should be compulsory listening for the young of today. They must surely lighten the load of growing up and expand the horizons of those who have forgotten how to smile.

Bought this, but it won't play in a standard cd player or off of a computer. Apparently, it's a super audio cd (SACD) which means you need a special machine to play it on. While I'm sure it would be great if you had such a machine, I think that Sony should make this a bit clearer before selling it to an unsuspecting public. So avoid this unless you're sure you have something that will play it!

65.Jacques Brel by: Jacques Brel

Music : Jacques Brel
Jacques Brel is the finest singer-songwriter Belgium (not France) has produced in the XXth century. His lyrics are powerful, compelling and beautiful. The word "poem" is more accurate than "song" to describe his work in my view. This compilation gives a good introduction to the artist, but you should not hesitate to buy the full collection (with text books) in order to get to know Brel's work. Powerful!

Ute Lemper is that rare thing nowadays: a singer at ease with Weimar cabaret songs and contemporary classical ones. Come to think of it, that makes her pretty unique and - the Weill/Brecht connection notwithstanding - she seems willing to push her own limits and use her simultaneously husky, sexy and operatic voice to serve such unexpected composers as Michael Nyman (or even, in later recordings Astor Piazzolla and Jacques Brel).
On this CD the songs from "Cabaret" are delicious and there are the odd Nyman gems, but the strongest points (I would dare to say) are her takings on the Weimar-time cabaret songs and the Piaf/Dietrich songs also available on "Illusions".
Dare to take this one in. You might just discover or re-acquaint yourself with ... Read More:
