71.Only One Life (The Music Of Jimmy Webb) by: Michael Feinstein
November 05, 2007
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Only One Life (The Music Of Jimmy Webb)
Feinstein is of course best known for his interpretations of the songs of Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and other writers of the 'Great American Song Book'. On this album, he is deliberately putting Webb in the same category. And it stands up. The album is deliberately slow-paced, romantic, with songs full of longing, loss and love. Even 'Up Up and Away' becomes a sexy samba. Webb is one of the last in the great songwriting tradition, writing songs full of melody and good lyrics and Feinstein's voice is well-suited to the material. This is an album for old-fashioned folk like me who like songs with lyrics and melody.

Music : Berlin Cabaret Songs (in English)
This is a spectacular album by german-born artist Ute lemper. It has been recorded before Punishing Kiss and Chicago and shoots in a different direction. The songs on the album are from the "Weimarer Republik"-era, which means they had been written in 1920s and 30s. Later in the Third Reich they were forbidden because of their critical and frank content, and because the composers were "degenarated" (that's how they were called).

Originally sung by Cabaret (or Kabarett-) singers, Ute Lemper brings the songs back to life. She catches the spirit of a lost world and turns it into a modern day cabaret act. Surprisingly these songs are very up to date. Or should I say the artists were very ahead of their time back in ... Read More:

It always amused me about the BBC-the Dictators of Public Taste. What planet were these people from?
In the 50s publicity men tried to get their artists a BBC ban as it would increase sales and it was still going on in the 80s!
Whatever their guidelines were they could have banned the entire output of George Formby for ezample.
Course there was even worse stuff being made by blues and country singers in the 50s eg Keep the butter churning and You played on my piano now you wanna beat my drum!!
This sort of thing-the risque blues-was even kept off the airwaves in the States.
Only in the CD Age can you now hear it for yourself and some of it is just plain nasty!
However on this collection is just innuendo rather ... Read More:

"They all laughed when Edison recorded sound" sings Ms Walker, but he made less than a pig's ear of it than Anthony Howell, who apparently recorded this release on his walkman placed under a his chair in the Wigmore Hall. The 1988 recording disappoints severely compared with the '50s efforts of the Flanders and Swan gigs, for example. The words are barely audible, and Vignoles' pianism lost in a wallowing, boomy acoustic.

Buy the CD for the rep, by all means, but don't to be able to enjoy it without the libretto to hand. Fortunately, the words are in the booklet. Badly done, Hyperion!
