"They all laughed when Edison recorded sound" sings Ms Walker, but he made less than a pig's ear of it than Anthony Howell, who apparently recorded this release on his walkman placed under a his chair in the Wigmore Hall. The 1988 recording disappoints severely compared with the '50s efforts of the Flanders and Swan gigs, for example. The words are barely audible, and Vignoles' pianism lost in a wallowing, boomy acoustic.

Buy the CD for the rep, by all means, but don't to be able to enjoy it without the libretto to hand. Fortunately, the words are in the booklet. Badly done, Hyperion!

Music : Camera
If you are a fan of Slapp Happy or of the individual work of it's members, Peter Blegvade, Anthony Moore and in particular the beguiling Dagmar Krause, then you should check out this album. Camera was an extraordinary opera especially created for television back in the mid 1990's. Broadcast only once on the UK's Channel 4 it's a disgrace that this magical work has for years been left to languish. This new soundtrack album shows off the powerful and moving voice of Dagmar Krause in an unexpected musical setting. As usual one can only marvel at how such strength, range and depth of feeling can emanate from her apparently delicate frame. Peter Blegvad's libretto for Camera is sly, witty, poetic and humorous in almost equal measure and acts as a ... Read More:

Gilbert Becaud began his career in the early fifties and was still having big hits occasionally in the eighties in his native France. This 20-track compilation scarcely does justice to him, but it includes all the essentials and will suffice for most people. In France, there is also a 37-track double CD (Encore plus de Becaud) with identical front cover artwork, containing all the songs included here plus 17 others, for those that want to dig a little deeper. Among the extra tracks on that collection is Mustapha Dupont, a controversial song about immigrants.

The tracks here include the two songs that Gilbert is most famous for internationally - Et maintenant (translated into English as What now my love) and Je t'appartiens (translated ... Read More:
