"They all laughed when Edison recorded sound" sings Ms Walker, but he made less than a pig's ear of it than Anthony Howell, who apparently recorded this release on his walkman placed under a his chair in the Wigmore Hall. The 1988 recording disappoints severely compared with the '50s efforts of the Flanders and Swan gigs, for example. The words are barely audible, and Vignoles' pianism lost in a wallowing, boomy acoustic. Buy the CD for the rep, by all means, but don't to be able to enjoy it without the libretto to hand. Fortunately, the words are in the booklet. Badly done, Hyperion!
