Music : The New Classic Chillout Album - From Dusk Till Dawn
Listening to CDs 1 and 2 of this compilation is like listening to two entirely different albums. Whilst CD 2 "Dawn" is as delightful as you'd expect from the excellent "Classic Chillout" series, with its soaring strings and choral harmonies to send shivers down the spine, they have decided to fill CD1 "Dusk" will dull, minimalistic thudding trance tunes. There is the odd commercial track from the likes of Moby and Leftfield, but let's face it, what self respecting chillout fan doesn't own these tracks already? On the other hand, CD2 introduces the listener to an array of beautiful haunting melodies. The particular highlight for me is Louis Clarke's "Moonlight River in Spring", combining oriental flutes and cymbals with bubbling synthesisers. ... Read More:

Best tracks: "Sixtyniner", "1986 Summer Fire (Hidden Track)", "Oirectine", "Seeya Later"

At one point this album was the Holy Grail of electronica; rare to the point of legendary, and going for silly amounts on eBay. Now it's available for a few quid anywhere and everywhere, and yes, it's another masterwork from Boards of Canada, a duo who are brilliant on an almost embarrassing level. Pretty much everything they've done has won me over, and Twoism contains some of their most evocative, powerful works. It's also one of their darkest, most claustrophobic works, full of eerie, unsettling pieces that chill the bone and yet provide some kind of warmth at the same time. Take the opening "Sixtyniner", which more ... Read More:

Music : The Chillout Session: Ibiza Sunsets
Plenty of classics here no doubt about that, the Ministry Chill Out is probably opening up the casual dance market to artists and tracks they wouldn't have heard before. This selection mines alot of obvious choices from acid house past (Frankie Knuckles, Beloved, Sueno Latino), the Madchester House scene (Stone Roses, Heller & Farley on The Farm, Primal Scream), and just some plain classic purveyors of chill and electronica (Aphex Twin/Polygon Window, The Orb, Future Sound Of London). So top marks on selection, REALLY good tracks. So why isn't this the best Chill Out CD of all time? Well its this, it just seems to lack soul. Probably created by someone who has plucked out ALL the obvious chill classics with an eye on the money making and not on the ... Read More:

166.Orbus Terrarum by: Orb

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Orbus Terrarum
One of the most significant ambient albums of the nineties, Orbus Terrarum represents a journey across a landscape in the form of sound, with each track signifying a different terrain feature. The journey begins in the lush, dense ravine of 'Valley', with it's heavy rolling bass, gradually rising up into the airy, open spaces of 'Plateau', before descending again into the aquatic chimes of 'Oxbow Lakes'. The 'landscape as sound' theme is seemingly abandoned toward the end of the album, with an epic dub workout, 'Slug Dub', instead providing the finale, with humourous, if slightly sinister samples of a childrens' story about lettuce being eaten by 'nasty' slugs. Quite different from all the Orb's other albums, but definitely a classic.

Music : Pomme Fritz
I remember the fuss over this cd when it came out, back in 1994 (is it really 10 years ago????). The media weren't too pleased with it at all, as they wanted more of what had made this group great in the first place - i can never understand most music journos - if a group keeps the same style from album to album they are seen as boring; if a group changes it's style often then they are criticised for not playing the old stuff.....annoying! That was the case here. 'Pomme Fritz' is a fine album - a little odd, uncontrollably ambient, and most of all, refreshingly new...even 10 years on. The title track opener is probably the only track that bares any resemblance to their previous material - and the most sane piece here. It chugs and builds over 9 minutes and ... Read More:

168.City Reading: Tre Storie Western by: Air, Alessandro Baricco

Air seem determined not to repeat themselves. Instead of making another 'Moon Safari,' they've gone on to more challenging projects, such as writing the music for 'The Virgin Suicides.' This CD continues their soundtrack work, but this time their sublime music is used to accompany and imitate short stories and poetry provided by the Italian author Alessandro Baricco. Some people may find the readings a bit intrusive, but with some patience, the album becomes almost hypnotically sublime. Luckily, the poet has a good voice and the quality of his writing is of no real concern, as it is spoken in Italian anyway. (The sounds of the words are more important than their meanings.) Air have continued to make their music more complex and interesting. It sounds a bit like ... Read More:

I first heard this while sitting on the terrace at Cafe del Mar in Lanzarote, and everyone sat there just listening. Played with a bit of volume it is outstanding. There are a couple of tracks like Bizet's Carmen that I couldn't get my head round, but Danza Espanola No.5 is just outstanding. Not for everyones taste, and very different, but I play it in my bar, and a lot of people ask me what I'm playing...........more so than when I play any other CDM CD, with the exception of maybe La Caina.
