It's a real grower, this album. When I first listened to it, I couldn't see what the fuss was about, really. It sounded just like another chill-out CD, albeit better than the others. But after repeated listens, I started to appreciate how accomplished it was. The mix is so seamless that you can't work out where one track stops and another begins. Basically, if this is a chill-out CD, then it pretty much redefines the whole genre. This is not about loosely stringing together some nice tunes; this is about sounds, tempo, and rhythm. This album is unquestionably one of the best Electronica records ever made... You simply cannot be an electronic music fan without owning this CD. If for some unknown, crazy reason you don't own it, BUY IT IMMEDIATELY! A timeless classic... 10/10

Since "Premiers Symptomes" means "first symptoms," it's appropriate that it's the name of Air's collection of early singles. This French duo created a warm sweep of electronica that sounded like a complete , which is only marred by two funky, rather awkward songs pasted on to the end. "Modular Mix" kicks it off -- a dreamy song that sounds like the soundtrack for an underwater movie. "Casanova 70" and the languid "Les Professionals" add a lounge-y sound. And "J'Ai Dormi Sous L'Eau" and "Le Soleil Est Près de Moi" are sweet and slow , almost like a pair of trip-hop lullabies. Having never been to Cafe del Mar and never buying any previous CdM compilations I had anticipated the usual reworking of the well-know tracks present on the multiple chillout CDs now on sale. Thankfully I was completely wrong - this is by far the best of the genre compilations and is all new work from established and new artists. The blurb states that the album is new work from known favourite artists (CD 1) and compilations of new work from any artist who submitted tracks to the CdM website and was then voted on for inclusion by over 80,000 listeners (CD 2 & 3). There is a heap of great stuff on this compilation and many artists new to me who I plan to start exploring. Perfect for warm summer evenings outside and also to drift off to any time with a ... Although the criticism that this is dinner party music seems fair on first inspection, this album boasts some truly fantastic lyrics and vocals that put trip hop bands like Massive Attack in the shade. "Part of the Process" is melancholy and uplifting at the same time, "Over and Over" is one of the sweetest short tracks I have ever heard, while "Diggin' A Watery Grave" proves that music doesn't always need lyrics to be affective. Atmospheric, sad, funny in places, and ultimately beautiful, it combines electronica, reggae, hip hop, pop, and classical music into a seamless and truly unique mixture. It is only 'dinner party music' if you don't actually listen to it.

This album is stupidly good. The only CD that comes close to this album is Air's 'Moon Safari' that is legendary itself. If you are looking for a chill out album and you don't already own this you have been missing out for years. 'At the River' is of course the best thing about this album but every track has its merits and 'Your Song' will also grow on you. All great songs can be overplayed but very few remain as good as the first time you hear them but 'At the River' is one of those select few. Recommended for someone looking to relieve stress. This is surely the best album ever made.

As someone brand new to Boards of Canada I graduated to this from 'Music Has The Right To Children', having purchased both at the same time, so intially was almost intimidated by the markedly different sounds on openers 'Into the Rainbow Vein' and 'Chromakey Dreamcoat', with their guitar basis. On first listen only really the mighty 'Davyan Cowboy' struck home, but whilst it remains the strongest track on here, others such as 'Oscar See Through Red Eye' and 'A Moment of Clarity' gradually unveil their charms on further listening, sufficiently so to keep you hooks right through to the poignant double finale of 'Tears From the Compound Eye' and 'Farewell Fire'. There isnt much to say really apart from being a collection of mediocre tracks. Doesnt fit into my ideal collection of chilled out tracks that capture my mood and personally I found the experience entirely forgettable.

The best place to start for anyone thinking of buying an Orb record as it's got most of their best tunes edited down to a nice length and offers one classic after another. Even if you already own the albums it's still worth getting this 'best of'. My one complaint is that there's no tracks from Orbus Terrarum (aside from having Oxbow Lakes as a secret track) which is a shame as it would be nice to hear a radio edit of Slug Dub. Still an essential purchase.
