You have to have the volume up above 1/2 way to get the full benefit of the solos. That said, it is a wonderful masterpiece, performed beautifully - the sort of CD that it will take a long time to get bored with! It comes with the words, so you can sing along - but like me, you probably already know them! I am especially pleased that I decided to buy this CD.

As so often with recordings raved about by the UK critical establishment, I found this a big let-down. This performance is no doubt very scholarly and accurate, but to me it's precious, petite and ultimately soporific. The booklet says they wanted to create the freshness and surprise of a premiere; for me they achieved the opposite.

If you REALLY want a Messiah with absolutely superb diction, try out Radu and the Ama Deus Ensemble from American Amazon.

I have performed this piece as a member of the chorus in King's College Chapel and witnessed a superb performance at the Proms. I have also listened to this particular performance many times. This work is far less well known than "Gerontius" but for me (as for Boult) this is the greater work. I suspect that it is less performed than it should be because of the need for six first-class soloists. At every point, I find this strange and haunting work absolutely inspired. Perhaps the dramatic temperature cools towards the end of the first part, but this is necessary for the gradual building of tension through the extraordinary meditation of Judas (certainly the "hero" of this work) to the stunning apotheosis in the Transfiguration of Christ. I had the good fortune to sing this work as a school child in Canterbury Cathedral in UK, and have had a soft spot for it ever since. This marvellous recording comes much closer than any other I have heard to capturing the atmosphere of chamber style choral music sung in unique acoustics of a large European Cathedral. In my view, this is one of the truly great choral music recordings that should feature in any collection. Highly recommended too if you are new to this type of music: this is a nicely matched collection of beautifully sung accessible choral music. Enjoy!

This edition is amongst my very favourite choral recordings. The simplicity of Fauré's original score (as opposed to the great orchestral rendering he was made to write by his publisher) shows typical Fauré at work - great harmonic language and melody through the simplest of means - compare this with his D minor Piano Trio Op.120. There is so much more to it than Classic FM would have you think!

The performances are excellent, as one would hope from this great choir from Oxford, and the acoustic of Hertford College Chapel suits perfectly. The supplementals of the Messe Basse, some organ works and also de Severac's now-popular Tantum ergo (no doubt aided by this fine recording) add to what is a very good recording at an astonishing price! ... This is definitely the best of all the Adiemus albums, it combines the usual African chant and classical music with rhymic beats and startling originality. This is also the only album that makes full use of the dark, rich sound of the female singer, only occasionally used in other albums. This womans voice is so powerful and moving that her songs (of which there are only three on the album)have a tendancy to overshadow the others. However each of the other tracks have a magic of their own, combining pan pipes, traditional instruments and the human voice to take the listener on a journey.

Song 3 is rousing and spirited, song 6 melancholic and pure, but by far the best song is song 8. Sung by the female singer it is achingly plaintive, the sound ... Read More:

LSC&O Alagna, Hampson under Pappano shoud be good and it is! The recording eliminates that annoying hiss you often get from choirs, so much so that I wondered how they actually managed it (the choir that is as they all seem to have a tendency to lisp and hiss in the flesh) but that aside its a Glorious performance.
Lively joyous tempos singing and playing of the highest order....
The preludio is worth having and the Crisantemi has long been a favorite of mine and here is as good as anywhere.
No quibbles at all other than it could make our local choirs sound a little below par!

Fauré is perfectly at ease in this Requiem in that extremely agitated period of 1900, agitated by the industrial revolution or by the social war going on in the mines and the big factories. This world cut in two with the haves on one hand and the have-nots on the other, and the tremendous violence between them, between those who had paradise on earth and those who only had paradise beyond death, and death is flattening all differences into some long walk or long march to that beyond no word in no language is able to name, let alone describe. Fauré tried then with his music to take us from the riches of Madeleine's church in Paris to the soul-breaking death, that door to a somewhere that is nowhere in our knowledge. Soft, deep, somber, lurking behind each ... Read More:

This is a superb account of this Choral masterpiece from the mid-seventies and re-mastered in digital sound.
For somebody who prefers the more traditional style of conducting and playing of Mozart's works, they don't come much better than this!
One can forgive the rather big and full sound generated by the BPO, in typical Karajan style, as opposed to the more recent brigade of period instrument ensembles and generally fast tempi.
Despite this the recording is well balanced and the soloists, chorus and orchestral playing are all top grade.
If you like the interpretations given by Harnoncourt, Hoggward and alike then give this a try and you will find just how good the previous generation of conductors really were....
