Written in 1916 in the depths of his depression over what was happening to his beloved native Russia, Rachmaninoff poured his soul into this work. And what a work it is! Mr. Cleobury and the boys of Kings College do a superb job of bringing its every mournful nuance to life. Better than any Russian version I've heard! To have died and never to have experience this music would be sad indeed, for through its sadness there is a radiance which transcends and carries one away to blissful places then gently back again.

There are some pieces you can get away with getting cheap recordings of, but when it comes to the monolothic Mass in B Minor I think it's well worth spending a few extra quid to get a good recording - or in this case, a near flawless one. This massive, complex and enormously inflential work commands so much respect, it must be terrifying to perform it, but Gardiner's team certainly pulls it off brilliantly. Don't be put off by the authentic instruments aspect of this recording - Gardiner doesn't fall into the trap that so many other authentic instrument conductors seem to fall into: taking the pieces at breakneck speed. Hypnotic; healing are not terms I'd usually use in a review of a piece of music - too much like crystal gazing (Be Bop Deluxe - great track!), copper bracelets & ley lines - airy-fairy stuff that I usually ignore with a sneer but Pärt's music has an effect that does indeed induce (at least in me) feelings of peace and warm fuzziness. I first heard this in a TV documentary about the piece itself. A nice little doco – watch it if you can catch it. All the major protagonists were there on the screen except the composer who seems a reserved quiet person who shuns too much publicity – good for him! The conductor, Tõnu Kaljuste, has worked extensively with Arvo Pärt and this shows in his ability to bring out the best in ... Read More:

This collection of songs if by no means for the purist looking for a CD of Medieval music. The Babes rework and reinvent the songs giving them a contemporary feel without loosing the otherworldly feeling. The mix of voices are beautiful and I find it's a great relaxing CD

This recording was made in a small village church in Spain, well known for its wonderful accoustics. If any classical music lover can fail to enjoy this, it's beyond my understanding. Does the fact that José Carreras is a world famous opera star give everything he sings a touch of glamour which lessens the originality of, as in this case, the Argentinian and Hispano-American regional rythms? Actually both Argentina, Bolivia and Peru are referred to in the introduction inside the CD cover. In my opinion it's the simple songs - I have heard him in relatively unknown Spanish and German very soft and peaceful songs - which show Carreras at his best. So also in Misa Criolla. I have really enjoyed listening to this for the first time and I know that I will be listening to it many more times. It is a very relaxing CD to listen to. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys listening to classical music and opera.

OK, the recording is 1959, OK, It's ADD, not DDD, OK, the trend is now towards the baroque band and choirs of aorund 20 and not the massed musical forces north of Watford, OK, the choir comes from 'Udderfield and the orchestra from Liverpewel and not from trendy London. Yes I know all that. BUT This, for me is THE definitive recording of Handel's Messiah and THE one to own. It's got the great outsized Victorian tradition wall to wall, it's got the pre Christmas concert sentiment as standard, at no extra cost an' it's got the G(u)oosto of t'best choral society-EVER. And yet despite all that warm cosy sentiment, it has the intelligent caring musical direction of the one and only Malcolm Srgent who studied music at Cambridge and was one of the great conductors of the 20th century ...
