When Richard Maunder's editions get together with Christopher Hogwood and co, you know instantly that the result will be spot on. The sound of the boy treble line (singing alto as well) is earthy yet in tune, and well complemented by the strong lower parts. The orchestra is supportive yet unobtrusive. The dynamics and phrasing are all well chosen and executed. The choice of soloists is inspired, especially Arleen Auger - such a beautiful voice. It is just a pity that there is not more on the disc - some have argued in the 'Dona ut Kyrie' tradition that an Agnus Dei could be tacked on at the end using the music of the Kyrie. An excellent recording.

This 2-disc set is numbered 1 in Gardiner's great `pilgrimage' through the entire collection of Bach's surviving cantatas, but put not your trust in numbers where this series is concerned. The performances were recorded on the liturgical dates for which they were composed throughout the calendar year 2000, and the Feast of St John the Baptist and the first Sunday after Trinity fall just after midsummer. This issue has some claim to primacy from the sheer amount of music that it contains - several of the cantatas here are exceptionally long, and each disc contains an hour and a quarter of music. A lot of people dislike the Medieval Baebes for being supposedly pretentious and beloved by pseudo-romantic Goth types - but that's basically just musical snobbery. I mean, come on - with a name like 'The Medieval Baebes', who's stupid enough to actually think they're aiming to appeal to lifelong Medieval Music scholars? Really, you get far more out of them if you stop thinking of them in relation to other classical music and just love them for what they are - which is accessible, charming and unpretentious Medieval-esque choral loveliness. This is some of the most lovely music I've ever listened to. The melodies are wonderful and the recording is brilliant. It has moments of great depth and seriousness and others of great lightness and fun, theres much drama and entertainment value as well as inspiration. The harp pieces are just so much pleasure to listen to, I'm a great lover of the harp and after listening to this Cd I appreciate it in a new way which is quite something. Some of these pieces are so charming and memorable they really stimulate the imagination.
