Despite receiving strange looks from my husband, I played the above at full volume to get the benefit of the beautiful orchestration and vocals.

I wouldn't have put myself down as a huge fan of choral works, so it's either a sign of getting old or just that I have such fond memories of singing hymns at school [which, incidentally, I probably thought I hated at the time]; but I felt the hairs rise on the back of my neck as I listened to songs I haven't heard for 30 years, such as He Who Would Valiant Be and When a Knight Won His Spurs.

I felt quite sad listening to this CD and realising that due to current education policy, my own children will never become familiar with hymns like these, which are often poetic and moving ... Read More:

This recording was my first: it was so perfect that I had to buy more and hear more, so I owe a lot to this. I suppose I also owe a lot to the Honda advert that introduced me to it...

It is an astonishing text, and the variety of movements created by Pergolesi are beautifully crafted in performance here. Kirkby and Bowman, carefully supported by the Academy of Ancient Music, wring out the very emotional core of the music. The image of the Virgin at the bottom of the Cross could not be made more real, and the anguish, torment and pain born by the mother are truly brought to life.

Stop reading this and buy it.

I purchased this CD after a friend of mine played me the Soviet national anthem, which I really liked. I really enjoy the sort of patriotic, atmospheric style of the songs; it sparked a period of fascination of the Soviet Union for me. The songs are really good stuff; there are some quiet, moody ones and some others that really blast sound around the room. Many of the tunes have gotten stuck in my head, but not in an annoying way; they're just really catchy.

It all just makes me wish I understood Russian, because I often found myself trying to sing along to the words. (I didn't manage to find any phonetic pronunciation on the web)

I love this CD, it really is extraordinary. Obviously it's not everyone's piece of cake, but ... Read More:

Columbia and Dutton Laboratories are to be congratulated for remastering this from the original 78's.
This is a superb recording and realisation of Handel's greatest work. The soloists are all strong, the orchestra directed with complete confidence and deftness and surety of material by Sargent and the Huddersfield Choral Society are simply peerless at this time.
If you want a complete recording of the Messiah this is the one to buy.
Pure pleasure.

This is unlike any other recording I have heard - and a very good re-creation of the live performance. Even if you don't like religious music, this will still thrill and excite. The mixture of 'traditional' choir with modern instruments and the weird and wonderful recordings from Africa is still innovative, challenging and wonderfully affirmative.

This was Gardiner's first recording of the Vespers, before he was won over to the sound of original instruments. So, trumpets and trombones of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, instead of cornetts and sackbuts. It simply isn't as good as Gardiner's later version, recorded "live" at San Marco, Venice, which simply knocks spots off every other version in existence. However, the performance is pretty good (with the exception of Robert Tear whom I can't stand in any shape or form) and you get a lot of music for your money here, not only the Vespers but also a collection of other sacred pieces, all well performed. Worth it as an introduction to sacred music of this period, to see whether you want to go further.

I had in my collection Richard Hickox's recording of this alongside Solti's rendition. I was then told that, apparently allegedly etc, that Sir John Eliot thought his recording of Verdi's Requiem was his finest recording to date, so I had to buy it.

It is true - the performance of the Requiem and the four Sacred pieces are masterful. The Dies Irae, that most famous moment, is typical Gardiner - punchy and driven with no let up - 'day of wrath and doom impending' indeed. However, in the more gentle moments, such as the opening and later in the Libera me, Gardiner weaves a beautiful serenity into the performance.

The test for me with this piece is the 'Domine, libera, Domine' at the very end with the almost-Spanishlike dance ... Read More:

I don't like the idea that the hair doesn't stand up on the back of my neck and arms from the shear glory of the sound of the Welsh here. I would much prefer (as I am sure anyone wanting to hear the famous voice of the Welsh in song)the true way the songs were meant to be. This doesn't even represent the voices I heard on the way to the mines of the miners themselves, now that was a wonderful thing to hear and to witness in the morn. The heart and love of home is whats missing. There are much better to chose from.
