The other reviews here show that this is obviously a Marmite set - you either love it or you hate it. Me, I love it I treasure it and play it often. In such circumstances another review may not be of that much help to an undecided prospective purchaser because you can't know in advance whose taste you share, but for what it's worth: The treasure of this set for me is the B Minor Mass. It has been described as the greatest work of art in any medium ever and while that may be a rather overblown claim it isn't wholly indefensible. Gardiner's interpretation does it proud. As a big oasis fan, any cd that features some of their music is always worth a look for me. This take on Oasis' early work delivers a surprisingly satisfying result. The songs sound a little like the music you hear in a countryside cafe or B&Q. Mixed in with this, the instruments substituted for the Gallagher's voices, sound like they are from the Dallas theme tune. Its a bizarre experience to listen to and its hard to hear the music without trying to sing along, but somehow it works beautifully. I personally think it is a must for any oasis fan!

A notable propaganda film prefiguring the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Prokofiev's score is a rousing appeal to the Russian people to unite and fight, not simply confident of victory, but imbued with a spiritual conviction in their destiny. For me, the recording qualitys pretty good and theres a clear open soundstage. I agree that the George Shearing written Shakespeare melodies are the highlight. They should have done another take of The Heavenly Aeroplane. The timing between choir/orchestra all goes to pot and becomes cringworthingly bad in my opinion. The arrangement of the Lord of the Dance is enjoyable though overall its an enjoyable CD.

For me, the recording qualitys pretty good and theres a clear open soundstage. I agree that the George Shearing written Shakespeare melodies are the highlight. Like all the other Eliot Gardiner Bach recordings I have heard, this one hits the nail absolutely on the head. The playing is always precise and clearly articulated, while the tempi are, to me, perfectly judged, never allowing the more solemn pieces to slip into sentimentality. The forces that are used are not so large as to muddy any of the individual parts, but can still convey the power of the music where appropriate. The recording is beautifully balanced, allowing all the lines to be heard clearly. Perhaps the best compliment I can pay this recording is to say that it allows the listener to appreciate 100% of the music, with no detail being lost in performance or recording. Brahms wrote his German requiem (aptly titeld "A german requiem, and he later preferred to substitute "Mankind" for the word "German") around some tragic events in his life: the death of his mother, of his friend Robert Schumann, of the fierce but unanswered love he felt for Clara Wieck. This choral work, well over 70 minutes long, touches the soul like a breathtaking journey into death itself - not frightening and painful, but comforting and full of consolation. The recording quality is outstanding, the performance of the choir and orchestra, conducted by Herbert von Karajan, even more so. At this price, I'd say don't hesitate.

The musicianship, singing and recording are all wonderful, and the sound is so good, your living room will be transformed into a Gothic chapel. Unfortunately, this disc should come with a musical financial health warning, as newcomers to early music will probably find themselves shelling out for more and more of Emma Kirkby and Gothic Voices' recordings. And that's just the beginning: you'll develop a need for ever more obscure ensembles and composers for the rest of their lives.
