I know it always good to try something new, but some people hate Jazz (me included!) and some people hate classical. So is Classic FM not instantly limiting sales but combining both classical and jazz on the 1 boxset? Much better idea to have a Jazz Christmas and a Classical Christmas. Having said that, the classical end looks good, but I won't be buying it because of the jazz disk! I can't really sell a jazz CD that I don't want on its own without the rest of the set! Well, maybe I will, but I probably won't listen to the Jazz disk!

I must confess that this recording is not entirely to my personal taste, but it would be churlish to deny it a five star rating. As an atheist, I still get intense pleasure listening to the mass as an art form rather than as an act of worship. The Gabrieli Consort, here, offer a recreation of how a Lutheran mass might have sounded in the early-17th century. I have no doubts about the authenticity or quality of their production, it's just that the piece, itself, is not entirely to my taste. If Mozart had turned up at the gates of Heaven with nothing to show for his life but his setting of "Laudate Dominum" (Psalm 117) from his "Vesperae solennes de confessore,K339 to his credit:then that alone would have been enough to make him qualify for automatic entry with no further questions asked.It is THAT good. Unlike some classical recordings, the orchestra doesn't overpower the choir in this one. This is especially important when there is a children's choir involved. The Mass of the Children is a beautiful piece - fans of Rutter will not be disappointed.

This music is fairy emotional stuff; I don't think Hymnus Paradasi is as good as the earlier Requiem on which it is based. Perhaps it is just that the quality of the St John's naxos recording of the Requiem is just so good. I am inclined to think though that the gushy orchestration diminishes the work. Nonetheless, this is pleasing music. It may not be first rate (it goes without saying that Howells would not have been fit to tie the sandals of the Great composers), but that does not nean that one cannot derive pleasure from his music and thank him for his work.

More beautiful English choral music from St John's; I think what characterises this disc and the other discs in this series is intimacy.

Never mind, all good things deserve a sequel I guess. This follow up 2CD release matches the original in that the budget price doesn't reflect the quality, for the soloists, orchestras, conductors and the recordings themselves ensure it is a good quality selection of mostly familiar music from the classical music repertoire. The choices this time offer a slightly more varied repertoire than the opera-biased original, for example there are film soundtracks such as `The Mission' (Ennio Morricone), `Lord of the Rings (Howard Shore), `The Deerhunter' (Stanley Myers) and `2001 ... I first heard the Mediaeval Baebes on a UK double CD (Best carols in the world ever) featuring three of their trackss (Guadete, Coventry carol, Adam lay ibounden), all of which can also be found on teir debut album, but my curiosity only became aroused when that UK double CD was updated and repackaged with a different title (Best Christmas carols ever) and all the Mediaeval Baebes tracks were omitted with other choirs replacing them. My research showed that they have become an established group (albeit with line-up changes) and are now very successful in their chosen style, which some may regard as classical but (since they sing with their natural voices rather than operatic voices) seems more like traditional folk music to me.
