I'm not sure I've ever heard the Deutsches Requiem sound more Brahmsian. That may seem an odd remark, but many recordings make of it a sui generis piece, living in a funerary world of its own. But I hear in this performance from Rattle and the Berliners direct lines into the symphonies and the concertos that I'm seldom so conscious of with other performers. It's there in the melodic and rhythmic phrasing, in the orchestral textures, especially of the woodwind, and in the integration of choir and orchestra.

Like his recent Schubert Great C Major, this is in many ways an old fashioned performance. Tempi are broader than we get from more `authentic' modernists like John Eliot Gardiner, Roger Norrington and the like, textures are ... Read More:

This is really, really bad. I know there is a fashion for playing 18th Century music as if everyone is running to catch the trains that will be crossing England in the 19th. There is little evidence for this idea and in the case of this collection of songs it is clearly wrong.
The cover notes tell of the hymns as being seen by their creators and by John Wesley as teaching tools. They are rich in biblical and theological imagery which is meant to be thought about as they are sung. I almost pity Maddy Prior as she races through these . She sings without inflection and without any sense of meaning as the songs whizz by.
You can do better, which makes this even more disappointing. You get half a star for choosing good hymns.

This music is ecstatic, soaring music, which properly reflects the sacrality of the liturgy including the eucharistic sacrifice. I was particularly taken by the celtic resonances of "sing a new song", the Kyrie, the Brittenesque (reminded me of Peter Grimes) sound of the Eucharistic prayer, the haunting nature of the sanctus, the superb organ accompanied with occasional hints of Messiaen. This is wonderful music, underlining that modern classical music can be liturgically and spiritually relevant.

I have always been a lover of Mozart and this is I would guess his archetypal piece even though it was finished posthumously by Sussmayr after consultation with Mozart's widow Constance and indeed after others had tried.

All the majesty of a requiem mass is contained within aided by the brilliant conductor John Eliot Gardiner, a superb group of soloist (unlikely to be bettered in my view), the wonderful English Baroque Soloists and the equally splendid Monteverdi Choir.

Buy this and you will treasure it as much I have my copy which I have had for the last 18 years.

I feel honoured to be sharing this space with one of the contributors to this magical CD of diverse Christmas music. I can only assume that Grace Rossiter is one of those inspired and gifted humans who can pull this kind of performance from a gang of enthusiasts ~ thank you, Grace
It is so refreshing to hear some new arrangements and offerings on a seasonal collection such as this though I should not be surprised seeing that Naxos is the label

This quite gorgeous setting of the mass has always dwelt most unfairly in the shadow of the mighty "Missa Solemnis".Of course, the latter is a most glorious thing to exist upon the Earth at all,and when it is spectacularly confined on record,by someone like John Eliot Gardiner, then it's not surprising that many other settings of the ordinary are cast into the shadows,by it's sky-scraping,monumental edifice. However, the Mass in C is,by no stretch of the imagination,a dry run for that miraculous force of nature, and should be taken upon it's own terms as a fully-formed masterpiece in it's own right.Similar in scale and feel to Haydn's wonderful "late" masses (you MUST hear these if you like music at all),it is a deeply felt and original ... This was my first recording of the Nelson Mass, and it has a peculiarly English grace to it, typical of Trevor Pinnock. I love it absolutely, and even now I am still torn between this and the new Sir John Eliot Gardiner recording. As lovely as Richard Hickox's version is, it lacks that male-alto tone to bring through that particular line, most obvious at the third part of the Creed with their top D 'NON!' - a very favourite moment.

Pinnock's recording is full of class, grace, excitement and is beautifully performed. The production quality again is excellent as one would expect from Archiv.
