In the film Amadeus, Salieri (played by F Murray Abraham) says to his visitor, the local Priest, in the asylum where he has been sent after his suicide attempt, "God Mocks Me" or words to that effect. Salieri explains throughout the film that Mozarts music is miraculous and therefore a gift from God. Throughout his short life, Mozart composed some extraordinary works for the Church, the Requiem which he failed to complete because of his death, and this Great Mass in C Minor which he had began to compose in 1782 shortly before his marriage to Constanze Weber which took place the same year. John Dunstable was an English composer of early polyphonic music during the Medieval and Renaissance era. Born around 1390, probably in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, he was one of the most famous composers in England and Northern Europe during his lifetime and is credited with influencing the development of the `Burgundian School' of composers whose ranks include great names such as Dufay and Binchois. According to musical sources the correct spelling is `Dunstaple' with a `p', but there remains debate and uncertainty. More certain are his many travels around England and Northern Europe during his lifetime, and he is also thought to have owned properties in Cambridgshire, London and Normandy. I originally purchased this CD to get Pachelbels Canon, and really didn't care too much about what else was on the CD. What a pleasant surprise when it arrived, not a single "dud" track. The recording is well balanced and the tracks are nicely matched for both volume and bass/treble, meaning that you aren't constantly having to twiddle you volume and tone controls to be able to enjoy the music. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra gives a lovely well rounded performance with some real gems, both in the Albinoni Adagio, and in the Vivaldi Concerto for Four Violins. If you are into Baroque music, don't miss this one, it is well worth buying.

Like many people I was initially awed by the execution and virtuosity of this performance. But having got to know the work much better, and have begun to see past the shiny exerior of this performance. Gardiner's approach to Bach is ruthlessly efficient, ferrari like tempi often evaporate any hint of spirituality and the perfect, faultless attack of the choir adds to the generally chilly aura of this set. There is no room for human falibility in Gardiner's world, a creed diametrically at odds with Bach's own vision. The passion needs humility. I'd certainly not recommend this performance over either of the Harnoncourts (Mattias Goerne in the 2000 recording!) or the extraordinary Karl Richter in 1958.
