Notre-Dame was at the heart of the Western 12th century cultural explosion - and this CD attempts to capture something of that dynamic, Gothic-cathedral-building splendour.

Starting with a simple, solo-voiced (monophonic), quite beautiful hymn to the Blessed Flesh of the Virgin Mary the programme moves through increasingly complicated, two then four part arrangements of music that would have been performed in Paris as the first, `truly monumental' cathedral was raised above its foundations.

And just as the building has its foundations - so too with the music: Weaving in and out of the performances is the dignified simplicity of plainchant - the basis from which first Leonin then Perotin departed.

I'm glad Paul wrote something like this... because i'm a piano player and i've just started Uni and it's really classically influenced, i like classical music but i don't know much about it, i'd recognise tunes but i wouldn't know what you were on about if you told me...

I was brought up mainly from popular music, so it's nice to hear people like Paul McCartney and Billy Joel etc making classical albums so that i have some familiarity in the artist :) It's nice to know he took a long time to write it too so there's plenty of thought gone into it! People underestimate Macca :( it's a shame i think he's the better of the Beatles! He's still going :)

The track that epitomises this album is track 7 on the Bach disc - the chorale prelude for 'In Dulci Jubilo'. The voices, perfectly in tune (as always) descending in scales beautifully while the tune rots the whole thing down. Just...stunning. The Swingle Singers are probably the best a capella choir in the world and this shows through with the enemble, intonation and unique sound in a class of its own. The range (especcially of the sopranos) is awe-inspiring, and the arrangements are top-notch. Not expensive, and will leave you reeling. Other highlights include:

Bach - "Wachet Auf" Chorale Prelude
Bach - "In Dulci Jubilo" Chorale Prelude
Bach - Badinerie
Bach - Little Organ Fugue
Mozart - Magic Flute Overture

This is beautifully sung 14th century music. I have listened to it a few times and I still find it a little austere.

If you have listened a hundred times to Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez and never get tired of it, just try Bacarisse's Concertino. At least one of its movements, Romanza, deserves the same popularity and Narciso Yepes plays it with his usual mastership.

I came across Magdalena Kozena via a BBC Music magazine 'taster' of her singing a cantata in St.David's Cathedral with John Elliot Gardiner. I decided to explore further, and encouraged by the previous review here, I bought this CD. I have probably listened more to this CD than any other in my collection over the last year or so. Sublime and simple, her voice seems so perfect for Bach, and the emotion shines through, sometimes moving me to tears. Really - buy this CD!

This is a must for all Handel lovers.
The anthems are beautifully done. The tempi is just right. Moved to tears.
The Concerti a due cori is the reason I bought this CD. I heard them at the London Promenade concerts and the are a delight. The interaction of the oboes is magical. Fantastic and worthy of five stars. A must buy. You will not be disappointed.

This double CD is a must for all Tallis enthusiasts and sacred music lovers generally.

The quality of the singing is pure, spiritual and simply beautiful. Many of the pieces have a truly hypnotic feel to them which creates a lovely inner calm and feeling of peacefulness. Marvellous when de-stressing and chilling is needed.
