This takes me back to when I was younger. Ecce Homo is a masterpiece and the other items they sing are just fantastic. I actually bought this album the day it came out and I was not disappointed at all.

The songs are beautifully recorded, the accoustics and resonance of the room they are singing in sounds like the usual brilliant churches or cathedrals I used to sing in. This album takes me back, if you were a chorister and want to listen to when you were younger get this album. I paid £9.99 for it and I would pay that again for it, even though it is a lot cheaper on Amazon it is that good. If you want peaceful and entertaining music get this album, it is one of my faves and I love singing along even if i cannot no longer reach ... Read More:

This is a wonderful CD with traditional Christmas music. Surprised by review complaining about sound quality - no problems at all with my copy - completely hiss free in fact!

Brilliant performance, gripping, double-dotted strings give a real edge to Rex Tremendae, while Kirkby and Watkinson's pure sound blend wonderfully with the fruity Knabenchor sound of Westminster Cathedral. The 'authentic' instruments really make this recording stand out, from the military-sounding timpani to the warm tones of the brass chords in the Tuba mirum. The inclusion of the Amen chorus is a controversial choice, and will probably offend some, but to my ears this sounds entirely in place - simultaneously plaintive and infused with Todesangst. This is a brilliant attempt to peel back the Süssmayr's modifications and get back to Mozart's original intentions. Dropping in Mozart's Amen chorus is a daring and explicit break with previous interpretations ... Read More:

The double CD is ideal for the person who enjoys the Gregorian chants for the pleasure of hearing the melodies that can be achieved. It is also good for anyone who wants to take away stress, the music is so calming that it will take away the stresses of the day. I would recommend this CD to anyone looking for music to relax by or for the ardent music lover.

Most people think of Britten primarily in terms of his operas, but he was an undisputed master of orchestral composition as well, and this CD taken from a 1990 release of the now-defunct Collins Classics is one of the really good ones in their Britten series conducted by supreme Britten conductor Steuart Bedford. It contains the suite from his coronation opera 'Gloriana,' the 'Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia' from 'Peter Grimes,' and the 'Sinfonia da Requiem.' Amazon does not as yet seem to note that this CD contains the 'Gloriana' Suite, which is probably the least-recorded of the music here, and it's a corker. Assisted by Imogen Holst, Britten concocted the suite about a year after the disappointing première of the opera before an uncomprehending audience ... Read More:

Mr Rutter has come in for a fair bit of stick over the years, because writing popular, fairly easy to sing music arranged for groups ranging from the BBC Singers to Mrs Miggins, her cat and the choir of St Mary on the Wold MUST be a sin...

This collection is mostly his 'greatest hits' taken from various Collegium recordings, with a few bonus tracks. What really comes across in this recording is not just Mr Rutter's ability to write a good tune, harmonise it, give it good varience etc, but the clarity of music. This is truly brought about by his Cambridge Singers, who sing with an extraordinary clarity and sweet sound.

The title track is a new piece by Mr Rutter, and is a complete gem - accompanied by a flute and guitar only, the writing ... Read More:

I have to admit I'd never heard of Howard Goodall before searching on Amazon. I'm a fan of choral music, and for a long time I've had "find Mr. Bean music" on my to-do list.
I was surprised to learn it was by a contemporary composer, and ordered the CD.

It's quite a revelation; each piece is thoughtful, deep, and quietly masterful. I love choral, but I prefer Renaissance to contemporary. In just 24 hours, however, this recording has changed all that; a beautiful collection of pieces - I'd put this album right at the top of my favourites list.

So far my favourite is 'Palm 23' - I've never actually watched 'The Vicar of Dibley', so I don't to have to disassociate the music from a TV show. It's sublime, sheer comfort; a real indulgence, but ... Read More:

--Music--
Rutter's Requiem was written in 1985. In Catholic liturgy, a requiem is a Mass for the Dead, and as such involves strong tones both of mourning and loss as well as elements of hope and eternal life as reflected in Christian belief. Rutter states that, like Brahms and Faure, there are elements that depart from the traditional lines of a Catholic requiem. Rutter takes some of the texts from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Both the first and second movements, Requiem aeternam and 'Out of the Deep', set very dark, low, sombre tones. The use of strings at the beginning of 'Out of the Deep' is very effective, together with funeral-dirge like vocals. This contrasts greatly with the Pie Jesu, light and spiritual. The Sanctus is almost ... Read More:

The first thing to say is that whatever you think of these performances, be careful what you pay for a disc amounting to only 41 minutes of music. I find one of the works much more successful than the other, and I actually suspect that the composer may have as much to do with that as do the performers. The Magnificat (here in its more familiar D major version) simply does not strike me as being equal in inspiration to the best of the cantatas, such as no 51, and to whatever extent this may be a valid view the recording (certainly) and the performance (possibly) conspire to reinforce it.

You may experience a slight problem in setting the best volume-level for the Magnificat. The setting that suits the arias best may make the opening chorus uncomfortably loud, and ... Read More:
