Make sure you listen before you buy, and be sure these are the kind of performances you want. Because although other reviews rave about this, I remain unconvinced.

Mind you, these comments only apply to the first of the two CDs. I haven't heard the second and can't comment.

But I was taken aback by the interpretations on CD1, some of which sound positively Victorian - slushy, wobbly and tonally wooden. And there are some vocal infelicities that simply should not have got past the editing process.

Take the Mozart: even in the first two bars - just the instrumental intro - there's a slushy rit (the first of many!), a sudden accelerando and another rit just before the choral entry. Where does Mozart ask for ... Read More:

Absolutely delightful. Beautiful voices, magical organ playing. My Christmas mornings would be not be complete without the fantastic singers of Kings College Choir.

I once sang in a choir and had the pleaure of performing these glorious works. You can't really go wrong here if you are looking for fine and highly listenable examples of Baroque choral music. You get 23 pieces altogether (11 in the Gloria and 12 in the Magnificat) and each is typically 2 or 3 minutes long. It's the audio equivalent of a string of pearls. My personal favourites are 'Laudamus te' and 'Domine Fili unigenite' from the Gloria. A lovely recording at a bargain price - buy it!

This disc is a bit of an oddity. I can give it a perfectly sincere recommendation, but I think I had better explain myself carefully, and explain exactly what I am recommending.

The spirit of the selection is much what you would expect in a disc entitled `Christmas Treats from JSB' or `Immortal Melodies from The Christmas Oratorio' or something of that sort. Bach's Christmas Oratorio is not an oratorio in the Handelian sense. In the 1730's Bach faithfully turned out a cantata for each Sunday and major feast, but in one particular year he elected to reprocess some of his older music, most of it secular originally, and string the numbers together for the entire festive season under the overall title of `Christmas Oratorio'. Beautiful, haunting sonorous music - spiritual rather than religious in feel. I heard a track on Classic FM and was so impressed I had to buy the CD - at bargain price on Marketplace.

The CD has arrangements of Gurdjieff's spiritual music for cello and piano, as well as five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos. The music often has an Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox tone and is played in a subdued and almost introvert manner. Piano and cello match each other perfectly sounding warm, dark and achingly beautiful.

Even at full price you will not be disappointed by this CD. Put it on when you are alone and need to think stuff through - or share it intimately with someone you love. Be warned. This is not background music. It will cast its ... Read More:

Of course the much-heard Requiem theme is absolutely brilliant, and this soundtrack centres largely upon that theme. It combines the wonderful ringing of the string quartet with electronic beats and mellower moments and this creates quite a unique soundtrack. It's highly recommended! In my opinion, it could have branched out a bit more. I ADORE the main theme of course but I think more variations on it would have been good - so much could be done with it and sometimes I felt the tracks didn't go far enough to expand on the original thematic content, but it's still a great CD.

This is a wonderful recording of a masterpiece, probably the greatest work of Rachmaninov and one of the outstanding musical works of the twentieth century. Before this recording appeared, there was a choice. On one side were linguistically idiomatic performances, generally bass-heavy, from Russian or Bulgarian choirs, who could cope with the language and provide the deep bass tone that was essential, but sometimes struggled in other registers. On the other side were Western choirs who struggled with the language and failed miserably to provide the weight of bass that the music demanded. The Soviet-bloc recording quality tended to be dire, the Western quality much better, but mainly with the result of exposing the inadequacies of the choirs: poor diction, or, more often, ...
