Nothing quite puts you in the festive mood like an old classic from Irving Berlin and with Blake's two versions of the song, it's double the fun. The first version is more classically inspired and in keeping with the original that we all know and love. The second version (festive mix) is much more up tempo but still has a wonderful sound, thanks to the unique harmonies and arrangements provided by Blake.The third song on the CD, In The Bleak Midwinter, is another Christmas favourite and really hi-lights the wonderful voices of the group members, not just as an ensemble but also as individuals. Here I am reviewing the "Deluxe" set. This set boasts the quite superfluous addition of a couple of postcards and some rather twee Christmas decorations. Hardly worth getting excited about, but harmless enough. The CD in the set is basically a very expanded version of her "A Winter's Garden" CD. A variety of traditional seasonal songs are performed in Ms McKennitt's unique and definitive style all in that distinctive World/Celtic style. A delight to listen to, it presents carols and other seasonal music performed on a variety of fascinating 'ethnic' instruments. One of the Best Christmas Albums of all-time. I have the C.D ,and the video, and the cassette. I play them every xmas and it just gets better. Dolly wrote most of the Carols and they are as good as the old classics. Great songs ,well sung by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Very seasonal . Love it!!!

A superb collection of some of Mario Lanza's finest recordings. Considering some go back to 1949 - 1958, the recordings to CD are excellent. You'll never walk alone, sung as it was originally intended by the great Mario Lanza. A perfect collection for new comers or fans looking for the best of Mario Lanza. A track for every occassion.

A little gem of a cd; there are quite a few songs that I had never heard before which makes it a change from the normal Christmas carol compilations - though for all I know they may be Celtic (or Irish) standards. The instrumentation, as one might expect from the title, includes harps, pipes whistles and guitars as well as strings and is very nicely done; as someone else has remarked the effect is otherworldly in parts, and in others I find it attractively 'ancient'. I would thoroughly recommend this cd as something to listen to in it's own right or as background music whilst putting the tree up, which I suspect is what most people would want it for. An absolute snip at the price too !!

This is a great CD. I had always thought that Hodie, despite great moments of inspiration (such as the marvellously inspiriting conclusion)was a rather inferior score to earlier choral scores like Sancta Civitas and Dona Nobis Pacem, but Hilary Davan Wetton's new Naxos (super-budget) version has forced me to revise my earlier view. I still believe that the beautiful Sancta Civitas is Vaughan Williams's choral masterpiece ( although Dona Nobis Pacem and the late, neglected Epithalamion are, respectively, works of great power and beauty) but Hodie comes across as a much greater score in this recording. The main reason for this, I think, is because the conductor takes many crucial sections at a considerably slower tempo than David Willcocks in his fine EMI ... Read More:
