What can I say but: this is the only Christmas album I play all year round because it is that good! Traditional Christmas tracks sit comfortably alongside more modern songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallejuah", the Beatles' "In My Life" and Sarah McLachlan's "Angel", which are linked by the sentiment of Christmas rather than Christmas itself. Tidings is slightly more downbeat Christmas album in its blues-jazz style than most, but this works in its advantage by side stepping the squeezable cheese factor that many American Christmas albums seem to ooze! So if you like your music a little less processed then this is the Christmas album for you.

I have particular interest in the main piece on this CD, Britten's 'St. Nicolas' cantata, because a choir I sing in will be doing it later this year with our local professional chamber orchestra; interestingly, a previous performance of it by this group was so successful that a repeat has been requested. Britten, of course, wrote the work for amateur chorus and a professional tenor soloist, in this case his long-time lover, Peter Pears. Enough time has now passed that, although Pears/Britten recorded the work, it is appropriate and welcome that new forces give it a go. Philip Langridge, the tenor here, is actually a better-sounding singer than Pears, although no one would ever question Pears's musicianship. And I say that even as I am one of ... Read More:

The music is not bad but, I was looking for a CD with music sang only by children. This CD is also sung by adults and I did not like that. If you are looking for children CDs, I would not recommend this CD. Also, this is not a suitable CD for those who want to find Christmas music to teach to foreign children. Some of these songs are far too difficult for foreign children under eight years old to learn.

This album is great! Possibly a better selection that Volumne 1, though they complement each other very well. Buy both if you like your seasonal lounge slightly skewed. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without hearing Bob Atcher and the Dining Sisters singing 'Christmas Island' - an absolute tiki classic. On the boring technical side, the digital remastered sound on these and all the Ultra Lounge albums is superb.
