On this album, Michael has mainly avoided the obvious traditional carols but shows he is well capable of singing those by including Silent night (with Brian Kennedy), Have yourself a merry little Christmas, O holy night and Ave Maria. Several of the other songs may not strictly fit the Christmas theme but I’ve seen all of them on other Christmas albums – these are covers of River (Joni Mitchell), A winter’s tale (David Essex), Happy new year (Abba), From a distance (Nanci Griffith) and Amazing grace. More conventional Christmas fare is offered via covers of When a child is born (a UK #1 hit in the seventies for Johnny Mathis) and the rocking Driving home for Christmas (Chris Rea). A lot of people dislike the Medieval Baebes for being supposedly pretentious and beloved by pseudo-romantic Goth types - but that's basically just musical snobbery. I mean, come on - with a name like 'The Medieval Baebes', who's stupid enough to actually think they're aiming to appeal to lifelong Medieval Music scholars? Really, you get far more out of them if you stop thinking of them in relation to other classical music and just love them for what they are - which is accessible, charming and unpretentious Medieval-esque choral loveliness. Michael W. Smith has released two previous Christmas CDs, and they are staples of my December. This new release will be taking an honored place beside them in my December rotation. This release is a combination of his two previous releases. It mixes the choral feeling of the first one with the pop of the second one. And, as something new, he mixes in lots of instrumental pieces. 5 of the 11 songs are fully instrumental. But the orchestra sounds wonderful. What is truly amazing is that this release sounds Christmassy from start to finish from the very first listen. Only one track, "What Child is This" is a traditional piece. It's already been 25 years since the analogue LP record of this album was first released. This was one of the earliest albums released by Windham Hill Records. I was only a teenager at that time, but since then I don't know how many times I've listened to this AMAZING piano solo collection. For those who are not familiar with Winston's works, his piano style is not classical or jazz, and it's not like popular 'mood' piano and certainly not like a 'hotel lounge' kind of piano either. The sound of Winston's piano is clear, atmospheric and has a certain 'calming effect'. I'd recommend this CD to anybody who wants to spend the Christmas time and the whole winter quietly. Not the best from Miss Houston but never the less its still a gr8t album. If ur a Whitney fan then it is essential. This is her most recent release. Best tracks include One Wish, Cantigue De Noel, Deck the Halls, Silent night and Who would imagine a king, which is from the 1996 Preacher's Wife soundtrack album. Overall, this is a good album for the holidays (xmas) and her smooth voice does the songs justice. 4/5.
