Suprise I only have one Bowie album ( its true) Hunky Dory and to be honest I cant even say when the last time was that I played it, yea I have records and CD`s. so an old friend lent this to me to see if he could fire up my interest ,We have known each other for at least 30 years and use to have a good idea of what each other liked and listened to. I always thought that Bowie was a pop star who`s singles sold well and maybe a lot of his fans were teens ( and he acted ). secondly I knew his guitarist Mick Ronson had a solo album out `Slaughter on 5th avenue` Which I have never heard but know it is good,so me not to bothered with the David Bowie thing was seriously suprised and delighted by this 72 Live recording. I got this CD for my boyfriend for Christmas last year, and he absolutely loves it! Both of us are Tim Burton and "Nightmare Before Christmas" fans, so of course it wasn't long before I borrowed it for myself. The first disc is basically the original soundtrack, so if you already have the standard version then you'll already know what tracks are there and how great it is to listen to. A wonderful addition is that the soundtrack has actually been re-mastered, so the music is clearer, and still a delight to hear. The second disc is where it gets interesting. This is another fantastic album from Jethro Tull a truly excellent experience listening to the stunning music on this album,this album you can listen to all year round but I can imagine sitting beside a log fire with the snow falling unfortunately we dont get any snow here in South Africa but I can sit by the log fire.A very must buy for anyone who like this great band,go get this cd you will love it.Cheers.

I've been listening to this every Christmas for the last eighteen years and haven't got tired of it yet. The bouncy, folky style of performing carols is much more to my taste than the more solemn choral recording of carols that you generally get. This album has a nice mixture of carols, some well-known, some less well-known, some merry and some quiet, but all beautifully performed. I have yet to find another christmas collection that I like better than this one. If this doesn't put you in the mood for Christmas, nothing will.

The score for the film The Nightmare before Christmas is brilliant in its own strange way. Both the music and the lyrics are written by Danny Elfman, and he also sings the main character of jack Skellington. The songs are delightful and variated, and you discover something new in the arrangement, every time you listen to them. Besides, the instrumental tracks are beautiful and melancholy, a nice contrast to the humourous and often lively songs. If you like the film or are just a little bit interested in music, you should definetly buy this CD. It has so many great tunes, and the orchestration is just perfect. All in all, a soundtrack quite out of the ordinary.

This disc is a bit of an oddity. I can give it a perfectly sincere recommendation, but I think I had better explain myself carefully, and explain exactly what I am recommending. The spirit of the selection is much what you would expect in a disc entitled `Christmas Treats from JSB' or `Immortal Melodies from The Christmas Oratorio' or something of that sort. Bach's Christmas Oratorio is not an oratorio in the Handelian sense. In the 1730's Bach faithfully turned out a cantata for each Sunday and major feast, but in one particular year he elected to reprocess some of his older music, most of it secular originally, and string the numbers together for the entire festive season under the overall title of `Christmas Oratorio'. Despite receiving strange looks from my husband, I played the above at full volume to get the benefit of the beautiful orchestration and vocals. I wouldn't have put myself down as a huge fan of choral works, so it's either a sign of getting old or just that I have such fond memories of singing hymns at school [which, incidentally, I probably thought I hated at the time]; but I felt the hairs rise on the back of my neck as I listened to songs I haven't heard for 30 years, such as He Who Would Valiant Be and When a Knight Won His Spurs. I felt quite sad listening to this CD and realising that due to current education policy, my own children will never become familiar with hymns like these, which are often poetic and moving even if you don't have any strong religious ... It's 6th January and I'm going to play this one last time before I put the Christmas decorations away. Have played this again and again all through the holidays since it arrived. It is perfect Christmas music, I think, even/especially if your have mixed feelings about the "festive season". The traditional carols are done in his kind of weird, jangly, sincere-but-cool, home-made kind of way (esp on the earlier cds), just beautiful. But nothing at all like carols sung by soaring-voices-of choristers, far from it! The light hearted stuff is catchy and fun, but not in a tacky commercial way so you can surrender to the silliness of the season without feeling you're selling out, if you know what I mean.
