This is effectively a follow up to Bootleg series vol 1 - 3 (1961 - 91) How anyone thought they could find 2 let alone 3 discs worth of recent material to compare with those glory years is beyond me. Dylan has had several peaks over the decades, but each has hit a lesser height. Dylan's released work of the last ten years, while good, does not match the mid seventies era (Planet Waves / Blood on the Tracks / Desire), let alone the mid sixties classics. These outtakes reflect that drop in quality. There is nothing here to match "Blind Willie McTell" or "Last thoughts on Woody Guthrie" that appeared on the vol 1-3 set. WERE THE DC5 AS GOOD AS THE RECENT ARTICLES I HAVE READ SUGGEST? WERE THEY THE NEXT BEST THING TO THE BEATLES AT THE TIME? ER NO!! AS THIS RELEASE PROVES. LIKE MANY I REMEMBER THE MAIN HITS, BITS AND PIECES, GLAD ALL OVER AND CATCH US IF YOU CAN, AND THEY WERE GREAT POP SONGS. BUT AFTER THAT I REMEMBER VERY LITTLE AND I DID GROW UP IN THE SIXTIES. THIS RELEASE PROVES WHY. IT CONTAINS A NUMBER OF AVERAGE COVER VERSIONS AND SOME MEDIOCRE ROCK AND ROLL COVERS THAT LACK THE PASSION OF THE REAL THING. the best Xmas cd on the market at present - but not as good as the red cover Best Christmas Album in the World Ever which came out in 1995ish. To be fair this one has virtually everything but misses several key tracks - Shakin Steven's Merry Christmas Everyone, The Pretenders 2000 Mile and the Wham version of Last Christmas. It would be in bad taste for me to complain that theres no Rock and Roll Christmas by Gary Glitter but there you go. Other than these exceptions it has everything.

When this album hit the shops Pres.Kennedy had just been assasinated.As no one felt like celebrating-so they say-the album was a total flop and warehouses all over the country had 1000s of returned copies. Understandably Spector was annoyed after all that work! Probably the fact that the Singing Nun represented that years Christmas hit! In 1964 the British Invasion which gave a boost to his career as the Ronettes toured the U K and the man came here to nob with the Stones and his British answer Andrew Loog Oldham who would prove beneficial. as for the Beatles they would be his Saviour and by the early 70s both Harrison and Lennon had increased his bank balance considerably as well as his ego.Plus the fact that Apple had reissued ... At first I was skeptical of the whole Johnny Cash is a great musician/songwriter, and thought it was oldie country music for the oldies to reminisce about, and say how they never make music like they used to; that was until I was given this CD to try after seeing the film based upon his life. Johnny Cash is without doubt a very clever songwriter/commentator with catchy 2-3min songs that reveal a story with very poignant and/or witty poetry set to music you'll hum along to after very few listens. Clear examples of this can be found in songs such as 'A boy named Sue' and 'San Quentin.' I have loved all these tracks from when they were first released and I was a schoolboy,I managed to see them live twice around that time, at the Ulster Hall in Belfast, I generally don't listen to that much older music and tend to move on,usually staying quite contempory, but just about everything on this CD sounds just as great as it always did!

I was dubious about this cd before listening to it but have been immediately won over by the excellence and taste with which this recording has been achieved. Wonderful! I think it enhances already great Christmas tunes. Being an Elvis junkie for ......... a-hmm years, I am totally biased but I was emotionally moved.boo hoo boo hoo!
