Music : Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits
If you had stood up in front of the punks of 1977 and declared that the next ten years of mainstream British guitar based music would be dominated by a Geordie bloke influenced by American Folk\R+B and Country and Western, and wearing a headband and a dopey grin, you would have been showered with spit and bottled out of the room, but that is exactly what happened.

From the late 70's through to the late 80's mark Knopfler and his 'uncool' band Dire Straits were the benchmark of success, and filled Stadiums around the world selling tens of millions of Albums. Brothers in Arms to date remains the best selling album of all time in the UK, with the British record industry estimating at one point, that 1 in 3 households had a copy of ... Read More:

No one should need reminding that Roy Orbison possessed the ultimate voice in conveying paranoia, tortured emotions and fatalism in his songs so, at first sight, it is surprising that yet another compilation is needed.

However, take another look. This release contains eleven of his sixteen essential Monument hits. Any album containing such treasures as Only The Lonely, Falling, It's Over, Blue Angel, Pretty Woman and Cryin' must rate as a 5* star album on the strength of those tracks alone.

However, unlike many other compilation albums, this release has only one of his Sun recordings which is of no consequence since he was scarcely a rock 'n' roller anyway! Instead, the CD has three magical tracks from his last and critically ... Read More:

Certainly the peak of Blondie's career.

'Parallel Lines' is a nice and short album - backing up my firm belief that all the best music material comes in short packages. Every track plays like a single here, and there are four 'official' hits including two Number Ones; 'Picture This', 'Hangin' On The Telephone', 'Heart Of Glass' and 'Sunday Girl'. These included two singles that were released in a year (1978) that was the best-selling year for the 7" single in music history that went on to cause all sorts of manufacturing problems. The hit singles are well-placed on the original LP, and this was also released as a Limited Edition in clear Vinyl. The material on this album was so good, it could have easily spawned other singles ... Read More:

'Tusk' is undoubtedly one of the most under-rated albums in rock. IMHO many of Lindsey's spiky experimental pieces are utterly forgettable in their own right, but they make an effective contrast with the more melodic offerings of Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. Nicks' 'Storms' in particular is intimate and beautiful, while McVie's 'Brown Eyes' is similarly haunting. The bonus tracks are mostly of workshop standard and added nothing to my appreciation of the artistry underpinning the album or of Fleetwood Mac's situation during the recording sessions.

Later albums I found boring I was never a great fan, but this album is different, apart from "Sultans of Swing' which has been done to death i like very track especially "Six Blade Knife' I would recommend this album as a classic for your collection.

She'd taped a cool new song off the radio, a friend told me some 30 years ago; she'd play it for me when I'd come to her place after school.

The song was "Hotel California," and my perception of music changed then and there, once and for all. I didn't even really understand the lyrics -- I had barely begun to learn English, and apart from everything else I sure as hell didn't know what "colitas" meant. But understanding all the song's words wasn't necessary. From the first chords played by Felder and Walsh, this song was different from anything I had ever heard before. The layers of electric guitar riffs alternating with and ornamenting Don Henley's vocals, soaring in the chorus and culminating in a moving and evocative duet, touched a spot deep inside me that required no further explanation. ... I agree with those who put forward this work as the best of all Becker and Fagen's output in that marvellous run of albums that started here. There is a charm and innocence about this that would be lost in subsequent recordings where the sardonic lip curl and density of production would dominate proceedings. There is a real High School feel to 'Can't Buy a Thrill' that really draws you in to a world of growing up, of first experience and innocence just lost; of an America 'before the fall' and the smart-ass cynicism of later Dan albums that effectively chronicle and reflect the corporatisation of the 1970's music business. I never tire of listening to this and it's been with me for most of my adult life, always sounding fresh and surrendering new discoveries every time I dig it out. Its simplicity gives it ... There is nothing I can add to what has been said before.
I will admit that while I listened to radio 2 in the 70's-thanks mum & dad!- before I moved towards Joy Division & The Banshees I listened to your choice of music and I am extremely grateful for it.
"Daylight Katy" and "Sundown" are songs that stick with me now in middle-age as when I was young.
Bob Dylan was an icon for a generation but Mr Lightfoot caught my imagination when I was a nipper-listen to "If You Could Read My Mind" and tell me that Dylan wrote anything better and I would beg to differ....

Beautiful recordings from this masterpiece live session at Fillmore east.
Duane is something out of this world - and the others aren't far behind.
I place Duane Allman up there with Peter Green and Hendrix, what a player!
If you like Rock, Blues/Rock then this is for you, Clapton who??
