I first came across Dire Straits via a track on a Hope and Anchor live compilation album. The track was 'Eastbound Train' which sounded quaint, but striking among the new wave and manic r&b across the rest of the album. It ended up as the b-side to 'Sultans Of Swing' when they finally got around to making their own records. It was a bit of a sleeper, not waking until the band made waves in the US, but then they did sound rather out of time in the late 1970s. Though the band went on to stratospheric success and Mark Knopfler's writing continued to develop, this album has the feel of the bar band, complete with rough edges, a tight feel and a few bum notes. Knopfler writes about underdogs, strugglers and injustice, his drawl avoiding monotony ... Read More:

Great driving music from a band somewhat under appreciated in the UK. Buy it for Hollywood Nights if nothing else. Classic 70's/80's rock and almost peerless.

The tracks listed for this disc, with the exception of dylan, Kenny Rogers & Townes Van Zandt are foreign to me as regards the movie.
Where are the tracks by Credence, the beautiful title track "Tumbling Tumbleweed" and the end title track by Shawn Colvin,"Viva Las Vegas"??
Most of the other listings on the disc, have no association with the film for me.

The Pretenders are probably the most enduring and ignored bands from the 70s.alot of people dont even realise that they are still going strong.from their 1st album up until Viva El Amor most of their singles are included on this album and all of their biggest hits are here. This is a great album with so many different styles your never quite sure what decade you are in.

Pete Townshend didn't get it, nor did David Crosby. The Doors though were a street-cred namecheck for every indie outfit in the early 1980s, something which only seemed to cease with the Hollywood biog-movie. I was hooked when I first heard a compilation of their songs, but it became apparent after hearing several tracks that Jim Morrison was a limited vocalist. So was he a great poet and visionary or a mere bluffer? Whatever the answer, there's no doubting that The Doors' debut album contains some great tracks. Crosby dubbed them the 'the band who didn't swing.' Presumably, he never heard the swagger of 'Soul Kitchen.' He surely did hear 'Light My Fire,' the full six-minute version of which is breathtaking and an obvious template for The Stranglers' impressive ... Read More:

I personally think this album is one of the seminal albums that set the tone for the 80's, nobody said what that decade had to say better than INXS's brand of enthusiastic Rock Pop fusion, With Kick INXS are at the zenith of their powers, every song is a work of quality and Michael Hutchence great voice compliments the style of the music perfectly, INXS achieved a sense of identity with this album, Like Queen you could tell an INXS song was going to be an INXS song just with the first few notes, songs like New Sensation, Need you tonight and Devil Inside are some of the most memorable hits in history and the albums packed with other great tracks like Calling all Nations and Kick, Trust me, this is a stunning album, the 80's was the decade style forgot but it's music will live on.

128.Greatest Hits by: Neil Young

I had the pleasure of seeing Neil Young live in Kent last weekend. It was great to see he is still on tremendous form after all these years. With a catalogue of about thirty albums it is difficult for newcomers to his work to know where to start their collection, but this compilation covers a lot of his best known music. In fact according to the man himself it was compiled according to sales of the songs, airplay and known download history which gives the track selection credibility.

The collection begins with three of Neil Youngs' key songs- two epics which demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship behind his output (Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand) and the shorter, harder edged 'Cinnamon Girl', an instantly catchy number. These songs are all taken from his ... Read More:

Most, if not all, of the four reviews already on this page, and the Amazon review itself, are mislocated or confuse this album (Spectrum 554 383-2) with another similar one (notice how the reviewers refer to tracks that are not, in fact, in this listing!). This particular album is not the original recordings, but one of those studio remakes from decades later, probably 1998 so far as can be told from the cover notes. Johnny sounds tired (how many times must he have sung 'Ring of Fire' before he came to make this?).

Of course, you get digital quality with a remake, but I'd much rather have the raw and passionate originals. Caveat emptor.

Even though i was born twenty years after this was made, it defined an era for me, roughly from the ages of 19 to 23 (he wasnt much older when he made this), that age when you just finish with being a teenager and start trying to be less flippant, for most anyway, for me it was the time for first relationships, i was a late starter. But this album was me, mine, it is for me, still is. While others my age were listening to Tatu and Sclub and prodigy, i'd found Bob.

Tracks that stand out - Subterranean Homesick Blues. Maggie's Farm. Mr Tambourine man. It's Alright Ma. She Belongs to Me (One of my favourite songs). Gates Of Eden. Love Minus Zero.

Just.. run and get it before the bogey man gets you. And dont forget to listen to it a couple of times, cus it deserves it.
