I'm not going to comment on the musical merits of Mark Knopfler's (perhaps) defining achievement--but wish to note that that although this CD is extensively labeled as 'remastered'; it is ironically quite lacking in terms of audio quality. That is not to say it is a bad disc, but I was expecting more than merely an 'increased-loudness'-treatment. I do wish there is a SACD release of this album planned...

I remember Dury mainly from the late 70s/80s era as enjoyed his moment of chart stardom which coinciding with the rise of punk: What a Waste, Hit me with your Rhythm Stick... I kind of lost touch with him since then, and discovering this excellent collection was a treat. It's bulging with delights, all for the price of a new pair of panties. Dury is a brilliant wordsmith and the Blockheads provide a unique backing which is a hybrid of pub rock, funk and reggae. Unlike most punk bands, the Blockheads are expert musicians and Dury is as adept a writer as the likes of Noel Coward - though somewhat more potty-mouthed. This compilation covers all the 13 A side singles & 7 of their B sides during or after their period. The music is a mix of Country, Rhythm & Blues & Rock & Roll with a dash of Hard Rock thrown it & the Country Funk "Down On The Corner". The reason I'm giving this 3 stars is the fact that I'm not that into Country Music which nearly half the selection sounds like on here. My other gripe is that not all the B sides are here. Then again this got released on vinyl in 1976. On the other hand with CD technology (80 mins) they could of re-released it to include all the B sides. If you are curious about this band (like I was) I recommend this as a starting point. If you are a Countryish fan you can add to more stars to mine.

I agree with those who put forward this work as the best of all Becker and Fagen's output in that marvellous run of albums that started here. There is a charm and innocence about this that would be lost in subsequent recordings where the sardonic lip curl and density of production would dominate proceedings. There is a real High School feel to 'Can't Buy a Thrill' that really draws you in to a world of growing up, of first experience and innocence just lost; of an America 'before the fall' and the smart-ass cynicism of later Dan albums that effectively chronicle and reflect the corporatisation of the 1970's music business. After the almost "cult" appeal of their eponymous debut album, and the comparative lack of interest shown in "Communique", as the band trod water, 1981 saw the band release this, their seminal recording. Forget "Brothers In Arms" for one minute, if you possibly can, for it is here that the true soul of Dire Straits is to be found. There is nothing, in my opinion, that beats "Tunnel Of Love" in Dire Straits' recorded output for lyrics, atmosphere, musicianship and sheer joy. Beginning with the swirling fairground wurlitzer organ, the listener is catapulted immediately to that seedy fairground world so beloved a few years' earlier of David Essex. This is effectively a follow up to Bootleg series vol 1 - 3 (1961 - 91) How anyone thought they could find 2 let alone 3 discs worth of recent material to compare with those glory years is beyond me. Dylan has had several peaks over the decades, but each has hit a lesser height. Dylan's released work of the last ten years, while good, does not match the mid seventies era (Planet Waves / Blood on the Tracks / Desire), let alone the mid sixties classics. These outtakes reflect that drop in quality. There is nothing here to match "Blind Willie McTell" or "Last thoughts on Woody Guthrie" that appeared on the vol 1-3 set. The fact that this is the first review I have been moved to right since I was in school (I'm now 21) demonstrates just how highly I rate this. I'd seriously never really heard of Tom Petty until about 2 months ago, out of curisoity I borrowed it off a friends Dad and was blown away at how awesome this stuff is. Easily the best double album I own as there is literally not a bad track, the only time I reach for the skip button is when I don't have time to listen to the whole thing and find myself being drawn to some tracks that I just have to listen to!! Favourite tracks: 1,4,6,9,10,17,21,26,30,31,33 But 'Two Gunslingers' would have to be my favourite track, if I had to pick one. Dylan more than anyone else through his own search for who,what and where he was going and also in musical terms formed an articulate voice for our inarticulate postwar generation. Title says it all really. This is my favourite album ever. I bought it in 1977 and have played it ever since. Have been to see the Stranglers 14 times and they were superb pre-Hugh leaving. The 7 1/2 minute Down in the Sewer is my favourite track of all time. This CD also has the extra free EP tracks on it - excellent vfm!
