'Arthur' was originally conceived as a musical television drama, but when the drama never materialised, Ray Davies went ahead and released the music in the form of a concept album. The basic story relates to Ray's brother-in-law Arthur who emigrated to Australia some years previously.
Generally, the music here has a much more 'modern' feel than previous Kinks albums, mainly due to its very rich production and the typical Kinks sound augumented by horns. In many ways 'Arthur' is much more suited to the ideals normally associated with concept albums than 'The Village Green Preservation Society' because it does seem to be much grander in scope.
The songs are generally strong despite the fact that 'Victoria', 'Shangrila' and 'Australia' ... Read More:

This is an absolutely essential purchase for anyone that calls themselves a fan of Bob Dylan. Be really smart though, and wait till you can get it for under a tenner, like I did. Not that it's not worth full price - it is; but you can feel even more smug when you've got it for a bargain price.

Enough of my smugness! What about the product?

This collection of rare Dylan recordings (outtakes, live recordings and such) have been packaged on 3 CDs, and ordered more or less chronologically. CD 1 covers a period of just over 2 years from late 1961 (beginning with a brave performance from before the release of Dylan's first album in which he pretty much verbally destroys New York in front of a New York audience - "Hard Times in New York ... THE best Springsteen record. For starters its' got Atlantic City my favourite song by the boss. This is quite a dark album and the stripped down man with guitar, harmonica and great voice really fits. The album is mostly quite slow but does pick up pace at times (like the brilliant Johnny 99). Flows perfectly track to track and the songs on this album are great. Add to your collection. You won't regret it.

Throughout the year - Elvis wins every time - but on hearing this C.D. I have to say that Bing wins.

Theres no doubting the quality of most of these songs..though a longer cd would have been more fitting. Smoe ommsions are apparent..tracks like Family man,Isnt it midnight,Beautiful child and a couple of others should have been included. Unfortunately apart from the brilliant Gypsy..the cd has 2 awful tracks from the average mirage album which spoil a good set. The 2 new songs are ok though not amazing. If you are new to FM then this is a good intro to the band as alot of the hits are here. Also check out there excellent comeback album 2003's Say you will which is excellent.

From a band that only seem to release great albums, 'Aja' is well down the list of Steely Dan's best. What I like about their earlier releases is their blend of styles. 'Aja' is dominated by jazz and funk influences, neither of which are my favoured genres, but the music rewards repeated listening and is beautifully constructed. The title track is, for me, the highlight, its innocuous opening soon drifting into subtle, shifting shades of tonal colour and twinkling keyboards, culminating in a striking closing passage. 'Josie' is the obvious hit item, with a great guitar intro and a solid groove. 'Peg' is the other more overtly commercial item, the remaining tracks being more like the title track in approach.' Not the most instant album, and, as usual, lyrically challenging, but great ... Read More:

You know from the first track this is going to be a special album. Mental songs (Underground); heartbreakers (Soldier's Things; Town With No Cheer); instrumentals that speak (Rainbirds); even the obligatory teeth-gritter it would be churlish to deny Tom Waits after all the hard work he's put in on the other tracks (Dave the Butcher).

Every home should own at least one copy

It has long been my suspicion that when record companies re-sell us what we already have under the guise of 'remastered' or improved sound, there is actually very little difference, if any at all.
As I still had the older version of this cd I was able to test my theory. I'm no audiophile but to my ears at least there was no difference between the two. If I had to choose I'd say the earlier version is actually slightly better!
I must have now re-bought dozens of albums with 'updated' sound, and the only ones that I can tell have significantly improved are the King Crimson re-issues; the album Islands for example was originally badly recorded.
As far as this Van Morrison release is concerned however I can hear no difference. I have also purchased Veedon Fleece, but not having ... Read More:

The thing I like about Tom Waits is his songs are little movies. So it is impossible to hear Innocent When You Dream (a particularly good song on this album) without seeing barroom grotesques, squeezing tears from their faces as they howl out the tune. And of course the irony of a beautiful, delicate lyric being throttled by these Tom Waits reprobates is just perfect.

One other thing I like about Mr T is that he 'acts' his songs. Therefore no matter how heartfelt, angry or etc the song, there is always a bit of tongue in the cheek, a bit of burlesque, a little twinkle in the eye. Therefore none of the rock star posturing of his peers, because there's just a touch of silliness and absurdity to it all, no matter how genuinely heartfelt.

By the way, this is one of his finest ... Read More:

Beggars Banquest is considered one of the essential Rolling Stones albums. I have to say that whilst it contains some classic songs, there are more than a few fillers as well.

Here are my views.

Sympathy For The Devil:- one of the Stones best ever

No Expectations:- Brian Jones features little in this album, but what he does is wonderful - listen to the slide guitar

Dear Doctor:- mmmm. A bit of a novelty song. Amusing at first, Jaggers mimicry is spot on, but after a few listens the amusement wears thin

Parachute Woman:- Very underrated. Rather a hidden gem.

Jigsaw Puzzle:- Not particuarly good. A long song with no substance

Sreet Fighting Man:- Just brilliant. Based on the unrest that was gripping America in light ... Read More:
