Another great album from Albert lee and Hogan's Heroes. I saw them live yesterday (03/09/08) performing most of these numbers and they were fantastic as usual. New boy Elio on keyboards (see earlier review) is possibly a little over the top, but it made a change not to have to hear Pete Wingfield play Floyd Cramer's 'On the Rebound' and 'Last Date' yet again! Something for everyone on this album - your collection isn't complete without it!

Reviewing a best-selling, immensely popular album over 30 years after it was released is a bit like trying to evaluate Marmite. It's been around for ages, you know that people will always buy it, but everyone either loves it or hates it already, and there's little point trying to change their minds.

For me, Rumours is just about the best album ever made, and 'Go Your Own Way' is my favourite song, my desert island disc, the one that still sends a shiver up my spine and makes me smile and / or cry (or both) every time I hear it. Part of that is down to memories of earlier times evoked by the music (it just sounds like it came from better days, whether it really did or not); part of it is down to a knowledge of the intricate human relationships within the band ... Anyone with a soul can't help but be touched by the heart, head and hand of Springtseen before he was famous -- or could know how famous he would be. This music of this album is life-affirming and raises us all above our everyday life, to that place where we want to be. What Springsteen showed was that this ambition was not only valid but possible. For that promise, we owe Springsteen a debt of gratitude; for some of us made it to our 'promised land', while for others of us, we we're still on the road.

Nothing special or exciting here, a run of the mill three star album. Even the better tracks seem a bit jaded with time. Great blues from the band that toured this stuff in the late sixties and I remember them well from a free festival in Hyde Park with Eric Burdon & John Sebastian.

The Blind Owl was a pivotal figure in this band and they never really got it together after his death somehow. His counterpoint was strangely essential. That said, Larry Taylor was arguably one of the best bass players of that time, I'd never seen or heard fretless bass before. A fair enough compilation but no unheard gems or standout tracks here. It'll get played but maybe not too often.

With a cast of seven musicians, all named on the cover, 'Manassas' sees Stephen Stills and co chart expansive territory across a double LP, contained on one CD. Each of the four LP sides has a different theme. The first features rhythms that recall Santana, though it isn't as full-blooded. Stills, though, couldn't resist a title like 'Cuban Bluegrass.' The second is country/bluegrass and features a withering attack on the state of the USA using the form beloved of so many white Americans. Fast picking and fiddles herald 'Fallen Eagle,' the symbolic title betraying the subject matter. The slower 'Jesus Gave Love For Free' is similar to The Eagles in their tender moments in its use of harmonies, though not of pedal steel. The third side is a formidable battery of rock music done with an acoustic ... Read More:

177.Born in the USA by: Bruce Springsteen

Music : Born in the USA
Like Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours', 'Born In The USA' became the artist's biggest album because it appealed to a much wider audience than earlier material did. It was commercial. So what? There's nothing wrong with appealing to more people by making your music more accessible. Bruce Springsteen's previous album 'Nebraska' may possess greater snob value because, wow, it's dark and stripped down, but there is no disguising that much of it is also dull. As Tommy James commented when criticised for creating 'Mony Mony' at the height of the revolutionary, anti-war sentiments of 1968, why can't you make people want to dance?

The most obvious slice of glossy pop is, of course, 'Dancing In The Dark' and it soon palls, but nothing else is as disposable, and throughout Springsteen maintains a combination ... Read More:

'Damn The Torpedoes' is Pettys third album and was written at a time when he was fighting a legal battle with his record company. The anger and frustrations are clearly evident on this album and make it all the more forceful and potent. This album, more than any other, has produced what are now classed as Petty's main hits. From songs like 'Refugee', 'Here Comes My Girl', 'Even The Losers', to 'Don't Do Me Like That', you have the makings of a Petty best of album on one CD. 'Century City' is a strong song about his travels to Century City near LA, the place where the lawyers for the court case were, it is a touch cynical (as you might imagine) and just exquisite rock and roll. Overall this is a great place to start with Tom Petty, although there is so much more out there to delight and I'd say 'Wildflowers' is ... Read More:

The soundtrack of Forrest Gump certainly lives up to the reputation of the fantastic film which is also blessed with several Oscars. All the classic rock from the 1950s through the hippy 70s and on to the 80s is brought to life through a dual-cd album also featuring the soundtrack to the movie. Truly the greatest collection of songs ever to be burned onto the shiny discs. A must buy for the fans of every type of music!

Who needs Freebird ? With the exception of track 17, each of the rest is either good, really good or fabulous heart-rending, foot-stomping, rock of the highest quality - the guitar playing is multilayered and just plain wonderful throughout. At under £3 this is probably the best value CD I have ever bought.
