This is one of those classic albums that everyone has to own, and it is a very special record. There are so many brilliant songs on this album; personal favourites are Out On The Weekend, Heart Of Gold and Old Man, but every track is just as brilliant as the previous and next. The overall feel is just mellow and relaxed in terms of musical arrangement and vocal delivery, but the lyrics are intense in their depths of heartfelt emotion. It sounds too simple to be this good, with very modest and unassuming instruments and a harmonica, which adds to the feel of the heart of the American countryside/prairies. This album may be 36 years old but it still sounds so fresh and is still relevant now.

I was looking for somewhere to start to begin my Fleetwood Mac education having vague childhood memories of it from the influence of my parents, and I couldn't have picked a better place to start! This is a wonderful compliation which covers different eras of Fleetwood Mac's musical development, and with that comes some very different sounds to their music. I love it more everytime I listen to it!!

To say Nick Cave isn't the force he once was, is like saying Vlad the Impaler had minor anger management issues. Glories LONG gone, he's resorting to loose balladeering and conventional rock in a vain and desperate attempt to disguise the fact he's got nothing new to say and should've given up on this music thing a long time ago. A new Nick Cave album is cause for despair, where once it was cause for celebration. Ok, you can't go on re-living past triumphs (ask Morrissey) but the guy must have SOME of that early threat and purpose kicking around somewhere. So here it is - the best selling songs from the best selling band ever. The idea behind this compilation is that all the songs were Number One singles either in the UK or US. Sounds fairly simple, but in fact browsing the negative reviews on here shows many people complaining about this CD. Main criticisms are either that a Beatles greatest hits isn't necessary because people ought to buy the individual albums, or moans about certain tracks being omitted (Strawberry Fields Forever has been mentioned a lot - yes it might very well be the Beatles' best single but it didn't reach No. 1). This album was on constant play throughout an American road-trip of mine in a camper van from festival to festival, state to state, gradually heading westward to California. I was 18 at the time and the year was 1989. The start of the journey began at the Woodstock festival, twenty years on, (opened with a speech from Jimi Hendrix's father and a set by Richie Havens). As a consequence it is drenched in memories. This album has it all. Steeped in the golden glow of the times, it covers many areas of being, heartache, visions, psychedelic thoughts, glimpses of pastoral idylls, all set within a hybrid of folk/country/rock that is distinctively Neil's own. I ordered this set after seeing it advertised in an email from Amazon. I was not very familiar with Johnny Cash, with the exception of Boy named Sue and Ring of Fire. This double CD really has blown me away. Cash's voice is great but the entertainment comes as much from his banter with the prisoners as from the songs, many of which have jail themes. All in all a great showcase for a natural performer. The sound quality is also excellent demonstrating better stereo effects than many modern albums.

One great track (Live forever) and a lot of average material. Although they would do better with Morning Glory they were never as good as the totally overlooked Diesel Park West (Check out the truly seminal "Shakespeare, Alabama").

Having previously mislaid my copies of Chronicles 1 & 2, spotted this today and thought it would be an ideal replacement. On the plus side, the tracks have been remastered since the above compilations were released and they have never sounded better, taking 18 of the 20 tracks from Volume 1 (ignoring "Commotion" and "Someday Never Knows"), and 6 of the best from Volume 2. Great to have this huge 24 track selection on one disc, but in order to squeeze them all on, the 11 minute guitar workout on "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" has been sacrificed, and replaced instead with a 4 minute edit. (Still have the original on mp3 anyway!) I may have a dodgy pressing but having already exchanged it twice, beware there is a huge hiss at the end of ... Read More:

When the lights came up in the cinema where we saw Wim Wenders' movie of the same name, we saw grown adults weeping. This is more than a band, it is a musical phenomenon. Such a synergy is rare in this day and age, and the vibe on this album is just fantastic. Buy it and weep, because you have missed your chance to ever see or hear Ruben Gonzales, Compay Segundo or Ibrahim Ferrer playing live with the band again, but the remaining members still tour and the band is organic, progressing through the years with younger, equally talented musicians, so if you see a gig advertised and can get to it, don't miss it! This album has changed many lives...
