Surely, Elton needs no introduction, as he was hugely popular around the world. During the period covered by this compilation, he only had two number one hits in Britain although he had several in America during the same period. Since then, he has had at least four further UK number one hits. So while many people consider the seventies and eighties to be Elton's golden years, he has demonstrated that he is not finished yet. Even in 1990, Elton had too many great songs to fit on a double CD, the most notable omissions from this one being Tiny dancer, Island girl and Little Jeannie. It has been a long time coming but the end result is a quality product. My girlfriend and I listened to it for the first time on a long drive across Germany and Belgium and we liked it so much that we let it repeat several times. The melodies are good, the musicianship is first class and some of the political comment is very apt. he even nods in the direction of CCR a couple of times. Great stuff!

...pre-release a few years ago, I couldn't believe it. The strains of John desperately trying to sing 'Strawberry Fields' in C instead of the published A, alone in his bedroom with a manky tape recorder, looped with three successive versions sets the tone for the whole album. Paul's clarity of voice on 'Your Mother Should Know' and the first demo of 'Fool on the Hill' are brilliant. The fluffs (Paul screwing up and swearing), the quirks (John's 1-2-3 'Sugar-Plum-Fairy, Sugar-Plum-Fairy' on Day in the Life), Paul breaking a glass and John ribbing him for it and the omniscience of Sir George Martin, overseeing all. I own over 2500 vinyl LPs & Singles & a few hundred CD's. I've been enthralled with music of all genres since age 12. I first listened to "Street Legal" shortly after it's release in 78 and it totally blew me away. This was, is and will always be my favourite piece of music ever. Dylan covers everything in these grooves; lust, love, politics, death, despair, hope and the spirituality that has been an undercurrent in his previous work. No music lover should die without hearing this great album. Forget about the muddy production and the dated brass & backing singers, instead concentrate on that superlative voice, the complex lyrics and the wonderful songs. The tracks listed for this disc,with the exception of dylan, Kenny Rogers & Townes Van Zandt are foreign to me as regards the movie. Where are the tracks by Credence, the beautiful title track "Tumbling Tumbleweed" and the end title track by Shawn Colvin,"Viva Las Vegas"?? Most of the other listings on the disc,have no association with the film for me.

The son of Stanley Lane is one of Britain's overlooked treasures. A BBC4 documentary in recent years went some way to re-address this but the best way to deal with this to get into the man's music. Ronnie Lane's solo material is full of charm. The charm on this album is that the band sound like they are having fun. Lets be honest. Ocean Colour Scene have spent the best part of their career trying to re-write "The Poacher". This track is a thing of beauty and is an overlooked classic. "Tell Everyone" and "Done This Before" are folky and rustic but not twee in any way. "Kuschty Rye" is another standout on here. Now I don't claim to be a Rock expert, or a devoted fan of Mr. Kravitz. I have followed his career for a number of years, and every now and then a song of his will catch my attention. This CD is the perfect one for me, as I won't be getting all his CDs, and this covers the best of them( saying that I would like his very Curtis sounding' What goes around come around' from his Mama Said CD. This leads me to my second point. In his earlier CDs as he struggled to find the right line between sounding like your idols, and finding his own voice, he often came across as an immature artist. I believe that after four or five Cds he is finally starting to find his own voice. My favorite songs on this Cd are' Are you Gonna go my way?'' This is a great album, my personal Santana favourite. However, there is nothing to suggest on the box that this album has actually been remastered, or that anything has been done to 'buff up' the sound, despite another reviewer's praise for the improved sound quality on this release. Maybe this is just a reissue rather than a remaster. If it were the latter surely that fact would be advertised on the packaging.

A previous reviewer said its like the Beatles unplugged. So my apologies for taking it for my title- but it's exactly what I wanted to say. Though some of the tracks are fully orchestrated. This album just has the edge over the 2nd Anthology for me. There are some charming acoustic versions of well known tracks, especially the Esher sessions at George's house/mansion. It has a great feel. You'd never guess they were going to split up from this, it has such a positive, good-humoured, warm feel to it, with the banter and chat. (So,I think the Amazon review comment saying it is 'a study of how the Beatles themselves came apart', is rather mislaeding; it gave me the expectation of bickering and shoddiness.
