It would be easy to dismiss this album as nothing more than a homage to Sixties British Pop. OK, so there are some obvious influences, most noteably, the Kinks, the Stones & the Who and there is an unmistakeble 60s retro feel to the whole album but the standard of the songs is exceptionally high and they still manage to maintain that distinctive Green Day sound. Indeed they should be applauded for rather than taking the easy route and following up the multi-selling very polished American Idiot album with a carbon copy they have gone for a more basic back to their roots approach in true punk rock style.

This could have been a lot better,the remastering is not that good and I must agree it is a bit of a one track album.

Shortly after his first album Young released a rather patchy album that's real claim to fame was the first appearance of Crazy Horse. The voice is more assured than on the opener but that takes away some of the quirkiness that made the opener sound fresher than a rather stodgy offering in which Young seems to be desperately trying to make a niche for himself.

Elvis' only album of the '50s with no fast tempo rock and roll, and for good reason: it was his first Christmas, so the decibel level had to be lower. He does wail on the incredible blues-rock opener, "Santa Claus Is Back In Town". It's Elvis doin' his thing, driving home the double-entendres. It's been written that this album was banned, and the banners didn't have to go too far into the album to find something...too strong. "Blue Christmas" is medium-tempo blues-rock, a gem of a tune, featuring a typically great vocal and some genuine Presley low-down blues licks. If there was room back in the day, this could gone into the Top 20. "Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me" is a nicely syncopated rocker, a soft vocal over a hard beat. It works. The vocal approach ... The obvious question seems to be why did they wait 35 years to release this material, it's wonderful. I feel sure that most of this material could readily fit on any of Tom Pettys other albums though the Mudcrutch material does have a more country music feel than his other material. The best tracks for me are 'Shady Grove' and 'Lover of The Bayou', neither of which TP wrote. All said there isn't a bad track on the album. Instrumentally this album delights too. Tom Leadons country-rock style nicely compliments Mike Campbells perfection. TP doesn't take lead vocals on every track but the others don't disappoint. So what's everyone waiting for? Many artists have attempted to sum up the sadness and frustrations of those in impovershed communities. In doing so, many of these have aimed to offer genuine hope and encouragement at the same time. Issues such as poverty, gun crime, and oppression of working classes and ethnic minorities are not unusual song subjects. And yet, from punk to gangsta rap, I would defy you to find an artist who can sum them all up so eloquently and compassionately as Tracy Chapman. The collection (chosen by Tracy herself) opens with Fast Car, the song which made her a star almost overnight. With its beautiful and subtle melody, the song draws the attention immediately, but the lyrics are the real star, delivering a bittersweet message about socail problems and the difficulty of breaking ... You can't go wrong with Bruce Springsteen's entire catalogue, and seeing as how most are on a very low price you could pick them at random and still have a lot of nice surprises (but maybe not the Lucky Town era). This compilation is an interesting mix of tracks, but it barely scratches the surface particularly of the pre Born In The USA time and centres too much on the ones since then. There's practically nothing from Greetings, The Wild, Nebraska and Darkness, the huge amount of live tracks are also overlooked, so I think this is aimed more at the very casual listener who isn't concerned what great album tracks they're missing. Some great tracks with echoes of the 60's in some of the stripped down versions. It gives you an insight into how Bob is influenced by others and fits in well to his account in Cronicles. This is the best Dylan material that has been released for a long time. You can enjoy it new to Bob or old like me!
